Yann-Fañch Kemener ([ jãn fãʃ keˈmẽnɛr ]; born April 7, 1957 in Sainte-Tréphine ( Côtes-d'Armor ) as Jean-François Quémener ; † March 16, 2019 in Trémeven ( Finistère )) was a French singer traditional Breton music and a music ethnologist . Yann - Fañch is the Breton form of the given name Jean-François and Kemener means tailor .

life and career

From 1970 to 1980 he took an active part in the resurgence of the Kan ha Diskan in Brittany, especially together with his partner Erik Marchand . As a singer he contributed to the continuation of traditional singing.

At just under thirty he began to collect songs and in a decade and a half collected a considerable treasure trove of dance songs, funeral songs and poems, oral traditions from the heart of Brittany ( Kreiz Breizh ).

He taught the Breton language. Other artists, like Luise Ebrel, brushed up on their knowledge with him.

In 1977 he won first prize in the Kan ar Bobl competition (Breton: People's Song).

His publications and appearances (together with the Barzaz group but also with Dan Ar Braz , Didier Squiban , Alain Genty , Aldo Ripoche , Anne Auffret , ...) and the unique sound of his voice make him a distinctive figure in Breton singing.

He released numerous CDs and sang on many festoù-noz .

On September 26, 2009, he was awarded the French Order of Ermine . After a long illness, Yann-Fañch Kemener died on March 16, 2019 near Quimperlé (Finistère).
