Yasmine Belkaid (also Belkaïd ; * 1968 ) is an Algerian - American immunologist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and at the University of Pennsylvania .

Life

Yasmine Belkaid is the daughter of the former Algerian Minister for Higher Education, Aboubakr Belkaïd , who was killed in a terrorist attack in 1995. In 1989 she obtained a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from the Université des sciences et de la technologie Houari-Boumediene and a master’s degree there in 1990 . In 1991 she obtained a Diplôme d'études approfondies from the University of Paris-Süd and the Institut Pasteur and in 1996 a Ph.D. in immunology . As a postdoctoral fellow , she worked at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In 2002 she received her first professorship at the Children's Hospital Research Foundation in Cincinnati ( University of Cincinnati ). She has been back at NIAID since 2005 and since 2008 she has also been a lecturer ( adjunct professor ) at the University of Pennsylvania.

Belkaid works for the interaction of microorganisms and the immune system at the most important boundaries between the individual and his environment, the skin and the intestinal mucosa . She explores the role of the microbiome in controlling the immune system , tissue- specific immune regulation and immunity, and the role of nutrition in the immune response . In particular, she investigates the pathogens Leishmania major , Toxoplasma gondii , Cryptosporidium and Microsporidium spp. She is considered an expert in the immunology of the mucous membrane .

Awards

Belkaid received the gold medal of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2013 , the Prix ​​Sanofi International Mid-Career in 2016, and in 2016 she was made a member of the American Academy of Microbiology , a special award from the American Society for Microbiology . In 2017 Belkaid was awarded the Emil von Behring Prize of the Philipps University of Marburg and elected to the National Academy of Sciences , and in 2018 to the National Academy of Medicine . In 2019 she received the Lurie Prize in Biomedical Sciences and in 2020 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
