Yasumasa Canada ( Japanese 金田 康 正 , Canada Yasumasa ; * 1949 ; † February 11, 2020 ) was a Japanese computer scientist and theoretical physicist who became famous in 2002 for calculating the decimal places of pi .

Career

Canada began studying physics at Tōhoku University in April 1969 , where he received his bachelor's degree in March 1973 . He then went to the University of Tokyo , where he received his master’s degree in March 1975 and his doctorate in March 1978 . He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Plasma Physics at Nagoya University . There he held an assistant professorship from July 1981 to March 1984. In May 1981 he also received another at the Mainframe Center of the University of Tokyo. From June 1984 to August 1985 he made a guest research stay at the University of Cambridge . From October 1987 to March 1988 he taught mathematics at Osaka University . From April 1989 to March 1990 he was a visiting researcher at the Nuclear Fusion Institute at Hiroshima University . From April 1990 to March 1992 he was again assistant professor at the Institute for Plasma Physics and also taught at the University of Tokyo until September 1992. In July 1993 he went to Nara Women's University , where he taught computer science until March 1994. He then returned to Tokyo and became a full professor at the Mainframe Center in April 1997. In April 1999 received a chair in supercomputing at the Information Technology Center .

Up until December 6, 2002, he calculated pi to around 1.24 trillion decimal places on a supercomputer ( Hitachi SR8000 / MPP) in over 600 computing hours . With this he held the record for decimal places of pi until 2009.
