Yesterday wo Utatte ( イ エ ス タ デ イ を う た っ て Iesutadei o Utatte ) is a completed manga series of the Japanese mangaka Kei Toume that appeared between 1997 and 2015 and produced eleven volumes. The manga was published by Shueisha .

The manga series, which can be assigned to the genres of drama and coming-of-age , follows the university graduate Rikuo, the school dropout Haru and the teacher Shinako, shows their relationships to one another and deals with the resulting problems.

In 2020, the manga series was converted into an anime television series that is shown internationally under the name Sing “Yesterday” for Me .

Rikuo Uozumi finished college but doesn't know what to do with himself. So he gets through the day with part-time jobs in a Konbini and in a photo studio . Haru Nonaka, a high school dropout and hostess , visits the store regularly with her pet, a crow named Kansuke. Shinako Morinome attended the same college as Rikuo and took courses together. After graduating, she accepted a position as a teacher at a school in Kanazawa . Rikuo developed feelings for her, but never found a way to express them to her. One day Shinako suddenly shows up at Rikuo's workplace.

But even Haru, who fell in love with Rikuo, is confronted with her past when her former classmate Kōichi Minato comes back into her life and reveals his feelings for her. Not only that: there is also a tense climate within Haru's family.

The eleven-volume manga series was published by the Japanese publisher Shueisha , where it was first published in Business Jump magazine between 1997 and 2011 and then in Grand Jump until the series ended . With the release of the thirteenth edition of the Grand Jump on June 3, 2015, the manga ended.

On April 1, 2020, the manga received an additional chapter in the form of a one-shot . This follows Rikuo and Haru after the plot of the main series and also performs mini-stories.

The manga series was published in France from 2003 through the Delcourt publishing house .

Rikuo Uozumi ( 魚 住 陸 生 , Uozumi Rikuo )
Rikuo is a 26-year-old college graduate and unsure of what job to do. That's why he earns some money with a part-time job in a Konbini so that he can make ends meet. His hobby is photography . He has feelings for Shinako Morinome, a former fellow student at his college.
Haru Nonaka ( 野 中 晴 , Nonaka Haru )
Haru is 18 years old, dropped out of school and works as a hostess in the “MILK HALL” bar. She has a pet crow which she named Kansuke. She met Rikuo five years before the manga started, but due to the drastic change in her appearance, Rikuo cannot remember the encounter. She fell in love with Rikuo.
Shinako Morinome ( 森 ノ 目 榀 子 , Morinome Shinako )
Shinako was a fellow student at the college Rikuo also attended. Both became friends during their studies. After graduating, she took a position as a teacher at a school in Kanazawa , but moved to Tokyo shortly afterwards . She still has feelings for Rō's older, but now deceased, brother.
Rō Hayakawa ( 早川 浪 , Hayakawa Rō )
Rō is a friend of Shinako's childhood days in Kanazawa. Not getting enough attention from his family due to his older brother's illness, he began to develop an interest in drawing after others discovered his talent. He wants to study art at a university .

Kinoshita ( 木 ノ 下 )
Kinoshita is Rikuo's work colleague at Konbini and a musician in a local rock band. He is by Rikuo with words and deeds, but also can't resist teasing him for his private life.
Takanori Fukuda ( 福田 タ カ ノ リ , Fukuda Takanori )
Takanori is a former fellow student of Rikuo and Shinako. He likes video games . He asks Rikuo to take pictures at his wedding .
Kozue Fukuda ( 福田 梢 , Fukuda Kozue )
Kozue is Takanori's wife, whom he marries in the course of the storyline.
Chika Yuzuhara ( 柚 原 チ カ , Yuzuhara Chika )
Chika is Rikuo's ex-girlfriend who ended their relationship after four months. She is staying with Rikuo for some time because she was thrown out of her rented apartment after she could no longer pay the rent. She plays the piano and was a member of various groups that later split up because of her, which is why she was nicknamed "Destroyer" in local circles.

Kōichi Minato ( 湊 航 一 , Minato Kōichi )
A former student of photography and a temporary classmate of Haru in high school . He fell in love with Haru, but could not reveal this to her because Haru left school. After discovering that he had taken the wrong subject, he dropped out of college. He worked briefly with Rikuo in the same photo studio. Minato leaves Japan in the course of the plot and confesses his feelings to Haru.
Kyōko Sayama ( 狭 山 杏子 , Sayama Kyōko )
Kyōko is the owner of the MILK HALL bar where Haru works as a hostess .

A former classmate of Kyōko who has feelings for Kyōko.

Anime television series

On April 12, 2019, it was announced that the manga series would be converted into an anime television series. The director is Yoshiyuki Fujiwara , who has already performed works such as New Game! , Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan missed an anime adaptation. The production took place in the studio Dōga Kōbō . The first of a total of 18 episodes was shown on Japanese television on April 4, 2020.
