It falls into the genres of fantasy , adventure and romance and was adapted from 2014 to 2015 as an anime television series.

action

Yona is the princess of the land of Kōka, a small kingdom ruled by her father. On her 16th birthday, after a long time, she sees Prince Suwon again, her cousin with whom she has been in love since childhood. But that night he kills the king in order to take revenge on him for the murder of his father and to become king himself. Yona, who until then had only lived in the palace, flees with General Son Hak from the palace guard from the soldiers, who are also supposed to kill them.

First they flee to Son Hak's home, the city of the Wind Clan, and hide here. But the fire clan, who want Suwon as king, is putting pressure on the wind clan. In order not to risk a conflict, Yona and Hak flee again. The Wind Clan pretends not to know anything about their escape and agrees to Suwon's coronation. Hak's foster grandfather Son Mundok, the former leader of the Wind Clan, advises them to visit the priest Ik So. On the way through the mountains, where the priest lives far from any villages, they are ambushed by the fire clan. The prince of the clan wants to kill Yona as his wife and Hak. But in the fight, Hak and Yona fall down the cliff, so that the clan and Suwon believe they have died.

But Hak and Yona survive and are found and looked after by Ik So's assistant, Yun. Ik So advises the two of them to find the four legendary dragon warriors who once protected the country's first king. They carry the blood of four dragons who wanted to protect the king, who was also one of them at first. So they both go on a search and Yun joins them. He was taken in by Ik So as a child, is very intelligent and docile and is now supposed to help them and get to know the world. First they travel to the village of the White Dragon. There Yona with her red hair is recognized as a descendant of the first king. She is the one for whom the blood of the dragon and its power have been passed on and protected from generation to generation. Ki-Ja, who carries the power of the White Dragon, has been prepared for his role as protector of the king. Now he accompanies Yona and can track down the other dragon warriors.

In their search for the blue dragon, the four companions reach another village. But nobody here knows about the dragons. However, as they explore the caves below the village, they come across the warrior of the blue dragon who is hidden by the villagers. His dragon eyes, which allow a wide view and a gaze influencing the enemy, are seen by them as a curse. Each of the heirs of the Dragonborn lived lonely. The actually shy and friendly warrior of the Blue Dragon joins the group and makes friends for the first time. Yona gives him the name Shin-Ah. During this time, Suwon travels to the land of the Earth Clan, visits the country and organizes war games. When he leaves, the clan has made new trade contacts and is convinced that Suwon will become a better king. At the same time, the group around Princess Yona has to see again and again on their journey how the empire has become weaker under her father and the people suffer from arbitrariness and corruption.

This is also the case in the port city of Awa, where they are looking for the green kite. A governor of the fire clan rules here, who oppresses the inhabitants and practices human trafficking. Soon the group can find the warrior of the Green Dragon - Jae-Ha is one of the pirates who repeatedly attack the governor's ships. But he doesn't want to join Yona, he wants to keep his freedom. Yona decides to fight the governor together with her companions and the pirates, as the governor only came to his position and power through the bad government of her father. So that they can come to the aid of the abducted women during the attack on the governor's ships, Yona and Yun - disguised as women - allow themselves to be captured by the traffickers. When the battle breaks out at sea, they can use a flare to communicate their position to the others and despite great difficulties the pirates and Yona's companions defeat the governor's mercenaries together. In the end, it is Yona herself who kills the governor with an arrow.

Victory is celebrated in the city. But Yona surprisingly meets Suwon on a remote street, who has secretly traveled here because he has also learned about the human trafficking. Yona wants to kill him, but still has feelings for him and cannot bring himself to do so, and learns from Suwon that he still has some plans in the country. The next day the group leaves Awa, Yona and Yun have learned a lot from this adventure and have become more mature. Jae-Ha joins them after all, as he emphasizes from his free decision. Not long afterwards, the group surprisingly meets the fourth, the warrior of the yellow dragon: Zeno. The cheerful and open-minded hiker immediately joins them as they have no other goals or tasks. But like the other dragons, he is not particularly strong. Together, the group returns to Ik So. When Zeno asks what she wants to do after she has gathered all the dragon warriors, Yona decides not to attack the palace and kill Suwon, but to help the people in the country who are suffering as in Awa.

But when Iksu wants him to join her and her bodyguard in search of the dragons, he gets to know and appreciate them better.

Suwon
