Youth Wars - Observations in the German Province is a 53- minute German documentary by director Karl Siebig from 1991.

content

The film is about the street gang scene in the state capital Kiel at the beginning of the 1990s and achieved cult status due to the numerous people and dialogues shown in the film, which are mainly in flat North German slang . In the meantime, a correspondingly large fan base has formed around the film. Since the film was re-edited, countless videos dealing with the film have been posted on YouTube .

The people portrayed in the film belong to various youth gangs, whose names are supposed to sound martial in some cases, such as “bar terrorists”, “Blue Brothers” or “Mad Dogs”. The “Tigers” youth gang, classified as particularly dangerous in Kiel at the time, is also described and interviewed in the film. The main character of the film is Bernd Knauer, who was unemployed at the time and one of the “bar terrorists”. The film was shot mainly in the Wellingdorf district of Kiel . Some of the interior shots were shot in the Gaarden pub "Norddeutsches Eck" on Norddeutsche Strasse in Kiel-Gaarden. One scene shows the port of the seaside resort of Laboe , in which the “ bar terrorists ” attacked the deep-sea fishing ship Kehrheim 2 with gas pistols.

reception

A Hamburg city magazine describes the film as "true to life, enlightening and factual".

performance

The documentation appeared in two different versions. The documentary itself was broadcast once on the Kiel Open Channel shortly after completion and was subsequently made available as teaching material for police officers in Schleswig-Holstein . At the end of 1991 a substantially shortened version of the film with a length of 27 minutes was produced and broadcast on German private television as part of a Spiegel TV report entitled The Battle of Kiel - A Journey into Everyday Life in Germany . This production was also provided with a changed off- comment.
