Yucca filamentosa subsp. smalliana (English common name "Fernald's Narrow Leaf Yucca") is a subspecies of the filamentous palm lily ( Yucca filamentosa ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
Yucca filamentosa subsp. smalliana grows solitary or in small colonies. The narrow, blue-green leaves with fine edge fibers are typical . They are 20 to 40 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm wide. The branched inflorescence that begins far above the leaves is 1.5 to 3 meters high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white flowers are 2 to 4 cm in length and 2 to 4 cm in diameter. The flowering period is from May to June.
Yucca filamentosa subsp. smalliana is frost hardy to –15 ° C in Central Europe with protection in the winter months . The subspecies is rare in collections.
Occurrence
Yucca filamentosa subsp. smalliana is common in plains of sand dunes and grasslands in the states of Florida and Georgia .
