Julija Kanakina began playing skeleton at the age of 14 and took part in IBSF junior races in the 2011/12 season. In winter 2012/13 she started in the European Cup for the first time , where she achieved results between positions 15 and 18 in all eight races of the season. In the following season she drove into the top five in the first five races and then switched to the higher-class Intercontinental Cup , where her best season position was 8th in Park City . At the Junior World Championships in 2014, she finished 16th. In winter 2014/15 Kanakina also decreased mainly at Intercontinental part, reaching their five starts finishes among the top six, including a third place in Whistler . In addition, she made her debut in the World Cup in the first two races of the season , where she finished 18 and 13. At the 2015 Junior World Championships, she was sixth. She then started at the World Championships in Winterberg , where she finished 22nd in the individual and tenth and last place with the Russia II team.
