Yun Won-chol (born July 3, 1989 ) is a North Korean wrestler . He became world champion in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight in 2013 .
Career
Yun Won-chol started wrestling as a teenager in 2004. He focuses on the Greco-Roman style. The 1.64 meter tall athlete is wrestling in the lightest weight class in men's wrestling, the bantamweight. He is a member of the April 25 Sports Club in Pyongyang. His trainer is Choe Hak. He is a military man.
He made his debut on the international wrestling mat in 2010 at the Asian Games in Guangzhou / China. He finished there in the bantamweight the 7th place. He achieved the same place in May 2011 at the Asian Championships in Tashkent. In the same year he was also used at the World Cup in Istanbul. He won there over Jani Haapamäki from Finland and Iwan Lizatovic, Croatia and lost in his third fight against Elbek Tachijew from Belarus. Since this reached the final, he was able to continue in the consolation round, in which he initially defeated Thomas Rønningen from Norway, but lost in the battle for a bronze medal against Bekchan Mankijew from Russia. He finished 5th, with which he was qualified for the Olympic Games in London.
He was then also at the start at the Olympic Games in London in 2012. But there he lost his first fight against Choi Gyu-jin from South Korea. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 15th place.
In April 2013, Yun Won-chol won his first medal at an international championship with a third place at the Asian Championships in New Delhi. He defeated Doi Dang Tien, Vietnam, lost again to Choi Gyu-jin and won over Daudrav Sharma from India. Five months later he became world champion in bantamweight in Budapest. On the way to this title he defeated Iwan Lizatovic, Lukas Höglmeier, Germany, Peter Modos , Hungary, Iwan Tatarinow , Russia and in the final also Choi Gyu-jin, against whom he had always lost before. What is remarkable is the superiority with which he won this title, because in his first four victorious fights he achieved the impressive score of 29: 0. Only against Choi Gyu-jin was his win with 2: 0 rounds and 4: 3 points. In October 2013, Yun Won-chul also won the military world championship in Tehran ahead of Hamid Reza Chamesi from Iran.
In January 2014 he started at the "Yadegar-Imam" Cup in Tehran after the new division of the weight classes by the world wrestling association FILA in the weight class up to 59 kg body weight. He had to admit defeat to the Iranian Mohsen Hajipour in the final battle. In the same year he won a bronze medal in this weight class at the Asian Championships in Almaty behind Elmurat Tasmuradow , Uzbekistan and Shinobu Ota , Japan and a silver medal at the Asian Games in Incheon behind Kohei Hasegawa from Japan. He was not at the start at the World Cup, which took place in Tashkent that year.
In September 2015 he was sent to the World Championships in Las Vegas. He won there in the weight class up to 59 kg against Virgil Munteanu from Romania, then lost to Rowschan Bajramow from Azerbaijan, but secured himself in the consolation round with victories over Ravinder Singh, India, the former Olympic champion Hamid Soryan Reihanpour from Iran and Arsen Eralijew Kyrgyzstan another bronze medal.
It was the last medal that Yun Won-chol won at an international championship. At the Asian Cup in Bangkok in February 2016, he lost in the quarter-finals and came in 5th. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he won over Haitham Mahmoud Fahmy, Egypt, but then lost to Elmurat Tasmuradow, with which he was eliminated and only came in 10th place. He did even worse at the 2017 World Cup in Paris, where he lost in qualification against Ivan Lizatovic from Croatia and ended up in 22nd place.
After that he was no longer at the start of any international championships.
