Yuval Peres
Yuval Peres ( Hebrew יובל פרס; * 1963 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli mathematician who deals with probability theory.
Peres received his PhD in 1990 from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem with Hillel Fürstenberg ( The Limiting Measure of a Random Walk on a Fuchsian Group ). In 1993 he went to the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley , where he was a professor from 2000 to 2011. He is currently adjunct professor there.
Peres dealt with many problems of probability theory, such as percolation on Cayley and random paths on trees and in networks, branching processes ( branching processes ) and random patterns in graphs. For example, he found a simpler approach to difficult overlap problems in the Brownian movement via the survival probability of branching processes. Among other things, he was able to prove statements about the fractal dimension of the fronts of Brownian movement in two dimensions and the structure of their “thick points” and “thin points”.
In 2001 he received the Loève Prize . In 2008 he was an invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam ( Internal aggregation with multiple sources ) and in 2002 at the ICM in Beijing ( Brownian intersections, cover times and thick points via trees ).
In 2011 he was one of the recipients of the David P. Robbins Prize for the work Overhang (American Mathematical Monthly 2009). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . In 2016 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .
Bálint Virág is one of his PhD students .
