Yves Béquignon

Yves Béquignon (full name Yves Pierre Émile Béquignon , born April 6, 1899 in Lille , † April 1, 1990 in Strasbourg ) was a French classical archaeologist and epigraphist .

Life

Yves Béquignon was a son of the teacher Justin Sosthène Béquignon (1870–?) And Marie Marguerite Eugénie Thomas (1872–?). He grew up with four younger siblings. His sister was the lawyer Charlotte Béquignon-Lagarde (1900-1993).

He studied Classical Studies in Lille and from November 1921 in Strasbourg . After graduating, he was a scholarship holder of the École française d'Athènes from November 1923 to 1929 and stayed in Greece for several years. He took part in excavations and explorations in Thessaly and prepared a study of the topography of the Sperchiostal , with which he received his doctorate in 1937 as Docteur des lettres . In 1930/31, Béquignon was General Secretary of the École française d'Athènes.

In 1932 Béquignon went to Algiers and taught at a high school there. In 1933 he moved to the University of Caen and taught there as a lecturer ( maître de conférences ), after his doctorate (1937) until 1946 as a professor of ancient history. From 1942 to 1946 he was assessor of the dean of the Faculté des Lettres. From 1935 to 1965 he was also secretary in charge of the editing of the journal Revue archéologique .

In November 1947, Béquignon moved to the University of Strasbourg as a professor of Greek history. There he later served as director of the Institute for Ancient History and from 1949 to 1960 as assessor of the dean of the Faculté des Lettres. In 1972 he retired.

Until his appointment to Strasbourg, Béquignon's research focused on the archeology, topography and epigraphy of Greece. In addition to reports and studies on sites in Thessaly, he published a monograph on the landscapes of the Iliad in 1945 . In Strasbourg, Béquignon also dealt with the archaeological evidence of the Celts and with the estate of the Alsatian antiquarian Johann Gottfried Schweighäuser .
