Yves Thériault
Yves Thériault OC (born November 27, 1915 in Québec , Canada , † October 20, 1983 in Rawdon ) was a Canadian author and one of the most famous and productive novelists , storytellers and playwrights in Québec. He wrote in French in Quebec .
Life
Thériault grew up in the city of Quebec. He worked as a trapper , truck driver, radio announcer and journalist and for the National Film Board of Canada in Ottawa. In 1944 he published his first novel and was a member of the PEN in Canada.
As one of the first authors, he set a monument to the minorities of Canada in his literary work:
- the Jews in Aaron (1954)
- the Indians in Ashini (1960)
- the Eskimos in the trilogy Agakuk (1958), Tayaout, fils d'Agakuk (1969) and Agoak, l'héritage d'Agakuk (1975).
Agakuk was filmed in an elaborate production.
Thériault was a member of the Canadian Authors Association CAA, the International PEN Club , the Syndicat national des Écrivains de France , the Société des Gens de Lettres (Paris), the Société des écrivains canadiens and the Société des auteurs Dramatiques .
Honors
In 1975 he became "for being one of the most prolific writers and best-known novelists in Canada" officer of the Order of Canada .
He also received the “Prix France-Canada” and the Governor General's Award for Fiction .
