Yvonne Verbeeck (born December 7, 1913 in Rumst , Flanders , Belgium ; † February 26, 2012 in Antwerp , Flanders, Belgium) was a Belgian actress and singer , who was best known for her guest roles in sketches in Gaston en Leo , the Belgian model the comedy show The Fat and the Belgian , as well as by supporting roles in numerous other films and TV series .

Life

Yvonne Verbeeck started her artistic career as a singer and studied at the Royal Conservatory Antwerp ( Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerp ). Subsequently, she made numerous appearances in radio broadcasts of the Nationaal Instituut voor de Radio-omroep (NIR), the forerunner of today's public broadcaster of the Flemish Community Vlaamse Radio-en Televisieomroep (VRT) , which is largely financed by taxes .

During the Second World War , she began a career as a theater actress and gained the nickname “The Singing Nightingale” ('De Zingende Nachtegaal') through appearances in comedies and operettas . She became known during this time for roles in plays such as Een Hollands Wijfje and Fientje Beulemans and especially for her portrayal of 'Eliza Doolittle' in the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw .

In addition to appearances in theaters, she also starred in numerous films and television series, where she is very well known, especially through guest roles in skits at the side of Gaston Berghmans and Leo Martin in Gaston en Leo , the Belgian background for the comedy show Der Dicke und der Belgier . Yvonne Verbeeck, who suffered burns in an accident in 2006 , was temporarily in a coma and then had to undergo skin transplants , appeared on television well into old age and most recently played guest roles in the television programs Hallo België (2003) and Zone Stad (2008). In 2005 she also released a DVD entitled Artiestenleven , in which she talked about her almost 75-year stage career.

She not only made her native town of Rumst an honorary citizen , but also honored her with a bronze statue on the town's market square.
