Zacharias Stenglin (born March 4, 1604 in Augsburg ; † January 18, 1674 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a doctor of law with both rights and city counsel .

origin

He came from the old south German patrician family Stenglin . His parents were Christoff Stenglin the elder (1565–1638), councilor in Augsburg , and Judith Bachmayer (1570–1625). Stenglin was born in Augsburg as the tenth of a total of 16 children.

education

From 1615 he went to the then famous high school in Lauingen . He began studying law in 1617 in Strasbourg . He also studied in Tübingen , in 1621 in Jena and then in Leipzig and Wittenberg to return to Strasbourg in 1623. From 1624 to 1628 he made a trip through Holland, England, France, Switzerland and Italy. In January 1629 he obtained his doctorate in Tübingen.

Life

On June 5, 1629, he married Anna Maria Oesterreicher, who, however, died in childbed two days after the birth of their daughter Maria Philippina (born June 27, 1631). As envoy of the city of Augsburg , Stenglin traveled to the Elector of Saxony in 1630.

In April 1632, King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden seized the city of Augsburg without a fight. Zacharias Stenglin was sent to the king with other envoys to negotiate the surrender. In 1635, when the city was besieged, he negotiated the Löwenberg Accord with Lieutenant General Count Matthias Gallas as one of the envoys .

In 1637 he was appointed city counsel in the imperial city of Frankfurt . For the city of Frankfurt he took part in various city days and district and imperial days, and was envoy to the electoral court in Würzburg. As city counsel for Frankfurt am Main, he took part in the peace congress in Osnabrück and was also prompted to represent the interests of his hometown. He also took part in the Nuremberg Execution Day. The Duke of Württemberg appointed him his council in 1651.
