Zaza Burchuladze
Zaza Burchuladze ( Georgian : ზაზა ბურჭულაძე, Sasa Burtschuladze ; born September 9, 1973 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR ) is a postmodern Georgian writer , playwright and translator who exiled to Berlin .
Life
Burchuladze studied art studies and painting at the State Academy of Arts in Tbilisi . Since 1998 he has published short stories and essays in Georgian newspapers and magazines. Until 2001 he published in Georgia under the author's pseudonym Gregor Samsa, an allusion to the famous story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka . In 2007 he played a leading role in the film Jako's Dispossessed , the film adaptation of a novel by Mikheil Javachishvili .
He has translated numerous classics and contemporary fiction from Russian into Georgian, including Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Daniil Charms . Some of his novels have been published in French, English, Polish and Russian. His novel Inflatable Angel won the 2011 Ilia University Literature Prize for “Best Novel of the Year”. In 2014 he was invited to the “Nuit de la Littérature” in Paris.
Burchuladze is considered one of the most important contemporary Georgian authors in his home country. However, he left his hometown for Germany in early 2014 after his life and limb was threatened in Tbilisi. Religious extremists publicly burned his novels and essays, he was attacked and beaten on the street and the then Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili berated him on a news program.
Zaza Burchuladze has lived in Berlin since January 2014 .
