Zbigniew T. Fiema

Zbigniew T. Fiema (born March 7, 1957 ) is a Polish classical archaeologist .

Zbigniew T. Fiema completed his studies in archeology at the University of Warsaw in 1980 with a master's degree, his thesis Temples and Sacral Places in Palestine in the Bronze Age was rated summa cum laude . Since 1986 he has studied at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Utah , where he also obtained his doctorate ( Ph.D. ) in 1991 with the thesis Economics, Administration and Demography of Late Roman and Byzantine Southern Transjordan . From 1992 to 1997, Fiema was a senior archaeologist at the American Center of Oriental Research in Amman . In 1998/99 he was a fellow at the Dumbarton Oaks Institute for Byzantine Studies , and in 2000 at the Albright Institute of Archaeological Research in Jerusalem . In 2000/01 he was Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Helsinki . He then stayed until 2005 as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Helsinki, then until 2010 at the Finnish Academy of Sciences . From 2010 to 2012 he was Research Director of Jaakko Frösén in the academy project Ancient and Greek Documents, Archives and Libraries . In 2013 Fiema was visiting professor at the Winckelmann Institute at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Fiema conducts research on the material legacies and culture of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East from the Classical to the Byzantine period. One focus is on the exploration of the Roman period and late antiquity . In addition, he deals with theoretical questions of trade, urbanism , archaeological methods and theories. Since 1997 he has been head of the Finnish research project Jabal Haroun in Petra , and since 1994 he has been a consultant to the Petra Papyri Project at the University of Michigan and the University of Helsinki. Further excavations led him to Palmyra , Alexandria and Pompeii and Mada'in Salih ( Saudi Arabia ).
