Tokyo Prefecture Central Wholesale Market

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The central wholesale market of Tokyo Prefecture ( Japanese 東京 都 中央 卸 売 市場 , Tōkyō-to chūō oroshiuri shijō , English Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market ) is a public company in the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo , which operates eleven wholesale markets . It is subordinate to the Department of Industry and Labor ( sangyō-rōdō-kyoku ) of the Tokyo Prefectural Administration . The central wholesale market organizes and regulates the auctions in the wholesale markets and the transactions between wholesalers and intermediaries or authorized buyers and carries out health checks.

The central wholesale market is set up in accordance with the “Wholesale Market Act” ( 卸 売 市場 法 ), the current version of which was passed in 1971, but the first version of which was created in the German Empire as a reaction to the rice unrest of 1918 and came into force in 1923. Thereafter, public wholesale markets operated by the local authorities were set up. In Tokyo, the need for it was increased by the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923, which severely damaged private markets. In 1935, the city of Tokyo opened the markets of Tsukiji, Kanda (at that time on Yasukuni-dōri in today's Kanda-Tachō) and Kōtō (on the location of today's Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Ryōgoku on Sumida ), further markets followed in the next few years. In 1943 the administration of the markets fell to the prefecture when the city administration was dissolved. After the amendment of the law in 1971, a number of new markets emerged, including today's meat market; since 1988, in addition to the previous fish, meat, fruit and vegetable markets, several flower markets have also been opened.
