Zeta Capricorni (ζ Cap) is a spectroscopic double star in the constellation Capricorn . It has an apparent magnitude of 3.9 mag and its distance is approximately 385 light years .
The main star of the system is a yellow giant star with about 6 times the mass and more than 400 times the luminosity of the sun , its surface temperature is about 5200 K. Its companion is a white dwarf . It cannot be observed directly, but is only noticeable through fluctuations in the spectrum of the main star with a period of 6.5 years.
Zeta Capricorni is occasionally referred to as "Marakk" (from Arabic مراقّ البطن, DMG marāqq al-baṭn 'soft parts of the abdomen'). The proper name of the star " Merak " in the constellation Great Bear is derived from the same Arabic term , which should not be confused with Zeta Capricorni because of this similarity of names. a
Scientific research
Zeta Capricorni belongs to the rare group of barium stars among the red giants, which show unusually strong lines of simply ionized barium and other elements in their emission spectrum . Almost all barium stars are components of a binary system where they are orbited by a white dwarf, as is the case here. In a study from 1991, the star was classified in the Ba 2.0 class, making it one of the strong barium stars.
