The building is under monument protection (file number D-6-62-000-18 of the list of architectural monuments in Schweinfurt ). It is equipped with round gates, cornices , tail gables , a stair tower and a gable roof and was built from 1589 to 1591 in the Renaissance style.

Initially, military equipment and other imperial city objects were stored here and repaired if necessary (hence the name Zeughaus ).

In 1647, during the siege by Swedish troops under Carl Gustav Wrangel , Schweinfurt was shelled with cannons ; numerous roofs and the city towers , especially the Obertor, were damaged. Several cannonballs that can be seen poking out of the west facade of the armory are a reminder of this.

In 1802, Johann Caspar Bundschuh reported on some ancient weapons, including various hand weapons and cannons of different sizes that were once available in the armory and that the imperial city had to sell for the most part due to the war-related “financial need”.

Around 1826, the industrialist Wilhelm Sattler had a porch erected on the north and west sides of the building and the poisonous pigment Schweinfurt green was stored in the interior .

The “Schweinfurter Tagblatt” had its headquarters here from 1940, later as part of the Main-Post media group its branch.

After acquisition by the city of Schweinfurt in 2010, a major renovation took place in 2013/14 . Since one unexpectedly came across remains of green paint, an extensive arsenic remediation had to be carried out. The Sattler stem was torn down without a replacement. It was thus possible to faithfully restore the exterior facade and its color scheme except for four newly dimensioned ground floor windows on the south side.

The areas around the Schweinfurt armory were also extensively renovated and redesigned, with most of the parking spaces disappearing in favor of an improved appearance.

Todays use

Since the renovation, the armory has been a family home . It should serve the meeting of children and young people and their families.
