The theater of the city of Schweinfurt is operated as a play theater without its own ensemble in Schweinfurt . It is one of the leading guesthouses in German-speaking countries, especially in the music and dance sectors. Each season there are around 150 performances with artists from Germany and abroad on the program.

The theater, completed in 1966, is a listed building . The individual performances take place either in the large theater hall with main and side stages, with 750 seats in the spoken theater , or 695 seats in the music theater or in the upper foyer with 200 seats. In addition, a studio theater with 155 seats can be set up in the main stage. The three venues are visited by more than 80,000 people annually, including 6,600 subscribers for many years. Audiences also come from the surrounding metropolitan regions.

The theater is the second home of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra - Bavarian State Philharmonic Orchestra , which will give their 500th concert here in March 2019.

location

City walls at Châteaudun Park

The theater is located at the interface between Schweinfurt's old town , in this area today predominantly a modern city area, and the quarters from the early days . The building is close to the city wall, in the western ramparts , in Châteaudun Park, not far from the art gallery .

history

The first play "Comedy of the Last Judgment" attested by contemporary records was performed by the Latin school teacher Jodokus Vollkopf on the dance floor of the town hall on the market square in 1572.

The first theater building (former prayer house of the Free Christian Congregation) was located in the western inner city of Schweinfurt on Schillerplatz and was used as such from 1858/59 until it was destroyed by air raids in World War II.

In 1951 the town hall was opened on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, in which from 1952 about 130 theater performances took place per year.

In 1959, the Karlsruhe architect Erich Schelling submitted plans for a museum for the Georg Schäfer Collection for the site of today's theater, which was later built elsewhere as the Georg Schäfer Museum . After the city of Schweinfurt no longer pursued the plans for the museum for the theater location, it made the decision in 1961 to build a new theater here. Schelling designed a bold, modern theater building. His wife Trude Schelling-Karrer worked as an interior designer . Their glass compositions also serve the acoustics and design.

During the planning and construction period, there were also considerations of founding an ensemble of their own, from which they moved away again.

On December 1, 1966, the theater opened with Mozart's opera “ The Marriage of Figaro ”. Participants were the Bavarian State Opera and Rudolf Hartmann , who directed.

building

architecture

50 years after its opening, the theater was listed as an individual monument in 2016, as an outstanding example of a theater building from German post-war modernism . The building has a pentagonal floor plan. The enclosed space is over 50,000 cubic meters. The technical equipment of the full stage allows guest performances of almost any size. The variable stage portal is up to 12 m wide and up to 7 m high.

The external facades were not clad with white marble , as originally intended ; this was reserved for the floor in the entrance area and the associated staircase in the mix with gray and black marble. Instead, white plaster was used, which underlines the lines of the building.

Entrance with foyer and balcony

The foyer extends over two floors. The entrance and foyer area receives a lot of daylight through the large, south-facing windows, but can also be bathed in bright light through lights integrated in wide pillars or expansive ceiling installations made of Murano glass . A balcony is located on the south and west side of the upper foyer , with a view over the Châtaudun Park to the city skyline, in the form of a cocktail lounge for beautiful summer evenings. A long, curved staircase takes you directly to the public park from here during breaks.

In the auditorium with a large gallery (tier), the triangular, spatial structures on the walls to the right and left of the audience seats are particularly eye-catching due to their decorative color design, which also serve for lighting. The visitors can follow the performances on a main and side stage.

On the north side, the auditorium and foyer rooms are bordered by areas “behind the stage”, where artists prepare for their performance and the necessary utensils can be delivered.

Successful renovation

During the extensive renovation of the theater in the years 2000 to 2002, among other things, asbestos was removed, surfaces outside and inside were renewed, the technology (heating) was brought up to date, a lift was installed, which primarily grants disabled visitors easier access, and textiles References in the auditorium faithfully restored.

Planned expansion and general renovation

An enlargement of the theater building and a further general renovation are planned for 2020 at the earliest. The stage is to be expanded; there have been two expansion variants for this since 2018. The roof (sheet copper), the stage technology (cord floor, payloads for pulling up the stage elements, stage roof ) and the building services (electrical, sanitary, heating, ventilation, fire protection, sprinkler systems) are to be renewed. For the first time there are social rooms for the performing artists. As far as possible, gaming operations should not be impaired by the construction work.

game schedule

The theater of the city of Schweinfurt is one of the most successful guest houses in Germany. The schedule includes dance , concerts , drama and other performances. As a multigenerational house , the program focuses on all age groups and genres.

Since October 10, 1946 they have been guesting in Schweinfurt, nowhere more often, on March 2, 2019 for the 500th time as part of a festive event. After the theater was completed in 1966, there was even talk of moving the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra to Schweinfurt, although this was abandoned because of the connections to the city of Bamberg .
