Johann Christian Wilhelm Sattler (born May 13, 1784 in Kassel ; † June 15, 1859 in Mainberg near Schonungen ) was a German manufacturer. Today, Sattler is considered one of the outstanding exponents of early industrial entrepreneurship in Bavaria, who knew how to combine corporate success with civic and social commitment. Wilhelm Sattler held a large number of public offices, in 1842 he became district administrator and from 1845 to 1848 he was a member of the state parliament.

Life

After completing school in Kassel and with a country pastor, Wilhelm Sattler completed a commercial apprenticeship in colonial and drug trafficking in Münden from 1799 and joined Johann Georg Gademann's lead factory in Niederwerrn as managing director in 1805 . Two years later he started his own business in the neighboring Schweinfurt in the Kirchgasse and dedicated himself to paint production, among other things. In 1809 Sattler married Catharine Geiger (1789–1871), with whom he fathered 6 sons and 7 daughters, including:

  • Johann Jens Caspar Sattler (born August 27, 1810 - † January 19, 1880) ⚭ 1836 Susanne Henriette Amalie Stolle (1816–1900)

  • Therese Rosalie (* August 21, 1824 - March 20, 1898)

Entrepreneurship

Together with the pharmacist Friedrich Wilhelm Ruß, Sattler researched and developed industrial production methods for mineral paints and food. Noteworthy is the development of a Sago substitute in 1810, which was exported to France during the time of the continental barrier , and the manufacturing process for Schweinfurt Grün , which Sattler perfected in 1814. As early as 1813, he relocated part of his paint production to Schonungen .

In 1822 Sattler built factories for the production of wallpaper at Mainberg Castle , later a sugar factory followed, and in 1829 a stoneware factory was set up at Aschach Castle .

At the end of the 1820s, Sattler employed around 450 workers in his Franconian factories, at that time more than a sixth of all industrial workers in Lower Franconia. In order to avoid taxes and customs duties, Sattler opened additional production facilities in Langensalza in Prussia and in Prague- Schmichow.
