Zhang Lu ( Chinese  張 律 , Pinyin Zhāng Lǜ ; born May 30, 1962 in Yanbian , Jilin , People's Republic of China ) is a Korean - Chinese film director , screenwriter and former writer. He is a third generation Korean born in Yanbian, China. Before moving to film, he was a novel and short story writer. He started out as a filmmaker at the beginning of the 21st century. His art house films tell the stories of the Korean Chinese.

Life

Zhang taught Chinese literature as a professor at Yanbian University . When he was 38 years old, he made a bet with a film director friend that anyone could make a film. With no technical experience, but with the support of friends like Lee Chang-dong , he made his first short film in 2001. The film made it into the short film competition at the Venice International Film Festival . That caused a sensation in the festival round. He continued to make films and received the ACID-CCAS Prix for Grain in Ear from the Association du Cinéma Indépendant pour la Diffusion . As part of the Jeonju Digital Project of the Jeonju International Film Festival , he created the medium-length documentary Over There . This was expanded to a feature film called Scenery and was shown at the Busan International Film Festival .

In 2016, Zhang directed the film drama A Quiet Dream with Han Ye-ri in a leading role. In the film, three men try to win their hearts, played by the directors Park Jung-bum , Yoon Jong-bin and Yang Ik-june .
