The ornamental asparagus ( Asparagus densiflorus ) is a plant of the genus asparagus ( Asparagus ) in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae).

features

Ornamental asparagus is an evergreen, climbing subshrub that reaches heights of 30 to 150 centimeters. The plant forms tuber roots. The dummy leaves are flat, have a midrib and measure 10 to 30 × 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters. 1 to 5 each are arranged at the nodes. The leaf spur is thorny. The flowers are arranged in bunches and fragrant.

The flowering period extends from July to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

Occurrence

Ornamental asparagus is originally found in southern Africa from the Cape Province to Mozambique .

Ornamental asparagus is widely used as an ornamental plant. The species has been in culture since 1890 at the latest. The 'Sprengeri' variety (named after Karl Sprenger ) is well known.
