Zikim ( Hebrew זיקים) is a kibbutz in southern Israel with 809 inhabitants (2018). It is located on the Mediterranean Sea, 8 kilometers south of Ashkelon and only 3 kilometers north of the Gaza Strip .
history
The kibbutz was founded in 1949 by members of the socialist- Zionist youth organization Hashomer Hatzair who immigrated from Romania . In the period that followed, mainly immigrants from South America settled. In recent years Zikim was repeatedly from the Gaza Strip with Qassam rockets fired at. On September 11, 2007, an Israeli armed forces training camp near Zikim was hit by a rocket launched from Bait Lahiya , injuring 50 soldiers. To protect against rocket strikes, shelters and bus stops were built from concrete in the kibbutz and almost every house was provided with a concrete extension, similar to a bunker .
economy
Mangoes and avocados are mainly grown in Zikim and one of the largest dairies in Israel is operated. The international company POLYRIT , which specializes in the manufacture of polyurethanes , also belongs to the kibbutz .
