Cinnamon and Coriander (original title in Greek ΠΟΛΙΤΙΚΗ κουζίνα POLITIKI kouzína ) is a Greek film from 2003 by director Tassos Boulmetis , who also wrote the screenplay.

action

Fanis Iakovidis is a Greek astrophysics lecturer who lives in Athens and has been an excellent cook since childhood, much to the family's displeasure. When his grandfather Vassilis, who was still living in Istanbul ( Constantinople ), fell ill, Fanis remembers his childhood, the expulsion from Turkey, cooking and his girlfriend Saïme, whom he was an adult woman and daughter at the end of the film, married to a military doctor in Ankara meets again in Istanbul, where he wants to teach as a visiting professor for a while.

Flashbacks tell how the Greek family lived in Constantinople in 1959, expelled to Greece in 1964 and received anything but friendly in Greece. In Constantinople they were considered Greeks, in Athens they are now considered Turks.

The film shows the problems of the Greek-Turkish conflict such as the Cyprus question along a family drama with many tragic, but also comical moments .

background

  • The play on words of the original film title is lost in the German, English and Turkish titles . The Greek title means in the spelling πολίτικη κουζίνα about kitchen of Constantinople (Constantinople is usually referred to in Greek as "η Πόλη" = "the city"), in the spelling "πολιτική κουζίνα" on the other hand "political cooking"; phonetically, the only difference between the two variants is the emphasis.
  • The Turkish-language title Bir tutam Baharat means as the English title A Touch of Spice ( A Touch of Spice )
  • The cinema release in Greece was on October 24, 2003. In Germany, the film was shown in cinemas on April 28, 2005.
  • The premiere in Austria took place on June 1, 2005, the film was shown in the original version with subtitles.
  • The story is divided into three chapters called The Starters (οι μεζέδες), The Main Course (το κύριο πιάτο) and The Desserts (τα γλυκά).

Reviews

“The film does memory work without encouraging revanchist feelings. Characterized by fine melancholy and humorous lightness, it tells unobtrusively about displacement and exile and makes the pain of homelessness palpable. "
