Zinnober is a German trio for popular music that serves different styles of music and is primarily dedicated to German-language chanson . The band was founded in Cologne in 1984 and has since consisted of singer and lyricist Joe Knipp , guitarist and composer Albrecht Zummach and vibraphonist Clemens Dreyer .

history

The Zinnober trio had its origins in the collaboration between Joe Knipp (* 1954) and Albrecht Zummach (* 1957), who have performed together as a chanson duo since 1972. The duo was considered to be “politically engaged” and the “criticism of the system”, which was often expressed in their German-language songs, was based on the zeitgeist of the early 1970s in the wake of the 1968 movement and after the student unrest of 1968/69. In 1984 the duo expanded to include the vibraphonist Clemens Dreyer (* 1958), who like Zummach had also studied at the Cologne University of Music , to form the band Zinnober. The band has played with the same line-up since it was founded.

The trio initially performed many times in Cologne and the surrounding region. a. 1985/86 in the locksmith's shop of the Cologne theater . In addition, Zinnober gave guest performances throughout Germany with his German-language songs and chansons and toured the republic, especially in the 1980s. In 1985 the LP Nord-Süd-Fahrt was released . After a 12-year break, the band made their comeback in 1998 and have been giving concerts again since then, for example in Cologne in the old pawn shop or in the red salon . So far, the trio has made guest appearances across Germany in theaters and on stages, such as the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main, the Freiburg Theater and others. a. on stages in Baden-Baden, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. Zinnober also gave repeated concerts in the Cologne Theater am Sachsenring (TAS), which was co-founded by Knipp in 1987 and has been under his artistic direction ever since.

The CD Schnee von Gestern , released in 1998, was awarded the 1999 German Record Critics' Prize in the chanson category. In 2010/11 the band gave a larger series of concerts in the old pawn shop in Cologne and then released the live album Live in the old pawn shop that was recorded in the process.

Programs, music style, reception

The musical programs of the Zinnober group were created jointly by Joe Knipp as lyricist and Albrecht Zummach as composer; The previous programs include (as of 2016) :

  • Song music
  • North-South drive
  • Devastated hearts
  • Immortal sick
  • If you don't love art, you can always turn on the television
  • Old news

For their joint work, Knipp and Zummach were awarded the Culture Prize of the city of Neuwied , Zummach's birthplace, in 2000.

After its comeback in 1998, Zinnober's music found renewed approval from audiences and critics; Among other things, the Kölnische Rundschau in 2009 located the musical mix of styles of the trio as "top-class between blues , calypso and tango with borrowings from Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler [dancing]". The newspaper praised the trio in various reviews as follows:

“From the style of French chansons to the Calypso Belafontes to Schubert , Weill and the blues: No matter what the three set up, they absorb it with pun, warmth and intelligence. The drama of her songs and lyrics is gently built up and broken down, and sometimes released into a free floating lightness. "

- Basil Nikitatis : Kölnische Rundschau , 1998

Singing , vibraphone , guitar , bass guitar , ukulele , crackle box  - these are the ingredients for music that unfolds a unique sound, powerful and transparent, songs between poetry and irony, noon and moonlight. The audience leaves the concerts hit by 'snipers in romantic clothes'. "
