The "Zitterbäk" (bäk is Low German for Bach) is a year-round 3rd order flowing water south of Stralsund in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Name and history

The Zitterbäk runs in an ice age drainage channel from Lake Krummenhäger towards Strelasund . In its course it takes on several smaller tributaries that are not named by name and shortly before it flows into the Voigdehäger pond it is a considerable brook with a large water flow , which has gained some importance in the economic history of Stralsund. It represents the main tributary to the dam in Andershof. This is probably one of the oldest dams in northeast Germany. Its origins go back to the construction activity of Cistercian monks of the Neuenkamp monastery at the end of the 13th century (approx. 1290).

The Zitterbäk with its tributaries fed the pond from marshy lowlands (moors) to the southwest. Due to the morphology of the adjacent terrain (relatively steep slopes), a significant amount of surface and seepage water flows into the waters.

use

To expand this water reservoir and use Stralsund for the nearby town, the monks in the so-called "Höllengrund" built in the area of today's garden center Sundflor, long a 315-meter and 7.9-meter-high dam of glacial till . This enabled the pond area to be expanded by 19.9 hectares to now 23.1 hectares. The water volume of the " Andershofer pond " created in this way was 700,000 cubic meters.

The Zitterbäk as an inlet for the Bauernteich and Voigdehäger pond is almost uneven in its natural form. However, the stream is partly piped.

Two pond drains were created, one from the northern bank over a length of approx. 450 meters towards the Strelasund and a second towards the Frankenteich of the Hanseatic city, the so-called "Hohe Graben". The latter should ensure the economic benefit of the project. The so-called “copper mill” was built on it in Stralsund, in the area of Alte Rostocker Straße, which was in operation until the 19th century. The second advantage of the project was the additional water feed into the Stralsund ponds, as well as the possibility of fish farming.

This system was only changed in the 19th century with the construction of the Angermünde-Stralsund Railway . A railway embankment with two passages was poured through the " Andershofer Teich " between 1863 and 1878 . This dam divided the water into the so-called “Andershofer See” and “Voigdehäger See” areas.
