Civil Code (Lithuania)
The Lithuanian Civil Code ( lit.Lietuvos Respublikos civilinis kodeksas, LR CK ) is the comprehensive Lithuanian private law codification and main source of Lithuanian civil and commercial law ( no separate Lithuanian commercial code has been adopted). The Lithuanian Civil Code replaced the previous model code of Soviet private law and consists of 6 books. Some legal norms were adopted from European law books (or legal systems such as France , the Netherlands , Germany ).
The law passed on July 18, 2000 (No. VIII-1864) is one of the more recent civil law codifications in Europe and replaces the Soviet Lithuanian Civil Code of 1964 ( Lietuvos TSR civilinis kodeksas ) and the Marriage and Family Code . It came into force on July 1, 2001 (some standards not until October 1, 2001 or July 1, 2003).
The new code has been prepared by private law scholars from the Faculty of Law at Vilnius University since 1995 . The working group was led by Valentinas Mikelėnas .
