Civil Senate

A civil senate is understood to be a panel at the Higher Regional Court or the Federal Court of Justice that is responsible for deciding on civil or family matters.

A civil senate at the Higher Regional Court decides on the composition of three judges including the chairman. A civil senate at the Federal Court of Justice decides with five judges, including the chairman.

In addition to the civil senates, there are also criminal and special senates at the higher regional courts and at the Federal Supreme Court (e.g. for legal matters, for agricultural matters, cartel senate).
