The Zubački kabao is at an altitude of 1894  m. i. J. the highest mountain in Dalmatia and the main peak of the Orjen . It is located in the national territory of Montenegro .

It rises in the center of radial ridges. As a Karling , he is surrounded by Karen in the northwest, north, west, and southwest . The ascent through the Medugorje valley, which leads to Kar Pavlovica do , is particularly impressive . A hut is located at 1596  m on the Orjen saddle. The Zubački kabao (German: serrated cap ) got its name from the pointed shape of the ice age shaped karling.

geology

Extremely pure lime from the chalk of the high karst cover. The color of the rock varies between gray-white and light gray to bluish.

Location and surroundings

The Zubački kabao is the main peak of the Orjen massif, which also includes the other peaks that frame Pavlovic do ( Borovnik and Buganja greda ), as well as the Reovacki do and Pirina poljana ( Vucji zub ). At the Zubački kabao three orj crests meet (border between Montenegro and Bosnia), the short Boronik ridge, the Prasa ridge and the Buganja greda ridge. There are two significant snow valleys in the massif, which do not expire until the end of June and formerly correspond to the last retreat stage of the last Orjen glacier.

For a long time the indicated altitude fluctuated between 1895 and 1892 meters. The currently valid value of 1893  m was confirmed by the VGI (Vojno geografski institut, State Office for Surveying) in 1974.

history

The Zubački kabao was first mentioned by name in the middle of the 17th century by the Arab travel writer Evlija Tschelebi . It was not until the 19th century that botanists ( Visiani , Josif Pančić and others) researched the Orjen in more detail. The visit of Friedrich August Ascherson , who climbed the summit of the mountain in 1868 accompanied by Felix Huter and Pichler, is particularly important . This was the first documented tourist ascent, before that the summit was probably already climbed by surveyors. Since then, interest in the highest peak of the Dalmatian Coast Mountains has remained. As early as 1886, a summit trail was set up on the occasion of the ascent of Zubački kabao by the Austrian heir to the throne, Archduke Rudolf . The summit trail, which is still in use today, follows the route that Marijan Freiherr Varešanin had set up for the heir to the throne. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the ski area on Zubački kabao was used by the Austrian residents living in the Bay of Kotor .

After the Second World War, the tourist infrastructure on Zubački kabao was promoted by numerous mountain clubs. The summit remained the most popular high mountain destination on the Montenegrin coast until 1979, when a strong earthquake severely damaged the road links in April.

Economical meaning

On the ridge between the Vrbanj polje and the Reovački do stands one of the oldest mountain huts in Montenegro ( 1594  m ).

Ascent to the summit

Paths on the Zubački kabao lead from the Orjenska lokva, the Pirina poljan, the Pavlovica do and the Reovački do.

The easiest route is the route from Orjenska lokva. The Orjenhütte and the nearby Studenac spring offer rest stops along the way. Depending on your fitness level, you should plan two hours.

A much more demanding route leads over the head of the Medugorje Valley through Pavlovica do. Here you have to go over difficult terrain that requires surefootedness and a head for heights . You have to reckon with a total time of four to five hours, with no overnight accommodation in a hut. On this path, almost 900 meters in altitude must be overcome, with the ascent over the Medugorjetal the strenuous climbing path only comes at the end of the tour.

From Bosnia you can climb up the Pirina poljana , this is the longest tour and requires a 10 km climb through the Dobri do valley.

A mountaineering challenge is crossing the ridge between Vucki zub and Zubački kabao from Bijela gora . This is an almost high-alpine ridge crossing with climbing points in III. Degrees are unsecured. The inexperienced climber is strongly advised against this.

The Zubački kabao is notorious for its thunderstorms, which should be considered when planning a tour. On September 2nd, 2008, after a lightning strike, a large part of the famous snake skin pine forests in Pavlovica do and on Zubački kabao burned down .

Ski Area

A good 250 meters below the summit on the Lokva plateau is a gently flattening field of sinkholes with the only ski area on the Zubački kabao. It goes down to Vrbanj. However, there are no ski lifts and no management of the hut. In addition, the road to Lokva is currently not cleared in winter.
