Stendel tongue ( Serapias ) is a genus in the family of the Orchid Family (Orchidaceae). They are perennial herbaceous tuberous geophytes . There are around 15 species and numerous hybrids. They occur in Macaronesia , in southern Central Europe and from the Mediterranean to the Caucasus.

  • Serapias athwaghlisia Kreutz & Rebbas : The species first described in 2015 occurs in Algeria.
  • Schlankwüchsiger tongue-leaved ( Serapias bergonii E.G.Camus ): It comes from southern Italy to Turkey before in altitudes between 0 and 1000 meters above sea level.
  • Heart-shaped tongue tendril ( Serapias cordigera L. ): With the subspecies:
    • Azores tongue tendril ( Serapias cordigera subsp. Azorica (Schltr.) Soó ): It occurs in the Azores,
    • Serapias cordigera subsp. cordigera (Syn .: Serapias lorenziana H.Baumann & Künkele ): It occurs from southern Central Europe to the Mediterranean region.
    • Serapias cordigera subsp. cossyrensis ( B. Baumann & H.Baumann) Kreutz : It only occurs on Pantelleria .
    • Cretan tongue tendril ( Serapias cordigera subsp. Cretica B. Baumann & H.Baumann ): It occurs on Crete.
    • Serapias cordigera subsp. lucana R.Lorenz & VARomano : It occurs in Italy.
  • Serapias frankavillae Cristaudo, Galesi & R.Lorenz : The species first described in 2009 occurs in Sicily.
  • Serapias guadinae Lumare, Medagli & Biagioli : The species first described in 2017 occurs in Italy.
  • Single-tailed tongue tendril ( Serapias lingua L. )
  • Serapias maria F.M.Vázquez : The species first described in 2008 occurs in Portugal and Spain.
  • Misjudged tongue tendril ( Serapias neglecta De Not. ): With the subspecies:
    • Serapias neglecta subsp. apulica Landwehr : It occurs in southeastern Italy.
    • Serapias neglecta subsp. neglecta : It occurs in the western and central Mediterranean region at altitudes between 0 and 600 meters above sea level.
  • Nurra-tongue tendril ( Serapias nurrica Corrias ). With the subspecies:
    • Serapias nurrica subsp. argensii M.Gerbaud & O.Gerbaud : It occurs in southern France.
    • Serapias nurrica subsp. nurrica : It occurs in the western and central Mediterranean region at altitudes between 0 and 500 meters, in Sicily even 1000 meters above sea level.
  • Southern French tongued tendon ( Serapias olbia Verg. ): It occurs in south-eastern Provence and northern Corsica at altitudes between 0 and 200 meters above sea level.
  • Oriental tendril ( Serapias orientalis (Greuter) H.Baumann & Künkele ). With the subspecies:
    • Serapias orientalis subsp. apulica H.Baumann & Künkele : It occurs in Apulia at altitudes between 0 and 500 meters above sea level.
    • Serapias orientalis subsp. levantina (H. Baumann & Künkele) Kreutz : It occurs from Cyprus and Turkey to Israel at altitudes between 0 and 550 meters above sea level.
    • Ionic tongue tendril ( Serapias orientalis subsp. Orientalis , syn .: Serapias neglecta subsp. Ionica (H.Baumann & Künkele) H.Baumann & R.Lorenz ): It occurs from the east-central and east Mediterranean region to Transcaucasia.
    • Sicilian tongue-leaved ( Serapias orientalis subsp. Siciliensis Bartolo & powde. ): He comes in southeastern Sicily at high altitudes before 0-450 meters above sea level.
  • Small-flowered tongues ( Serapias parviflora Parl. ): It occurs on the Canary Islands and in the Mediterranean area at altitudes between 0 and 1200 meters above sea level.
  • Estremadura tongues ( Serapias perez-chiscanoi Acedo ): It occurs in western Portugal and western Spain at altitudes between 0 and 400 meters above sea level.
