The platthalm rush is common in Europe and Asia. The plant was introduced to North America. It grows on damp roadsides, on paths, in trampled meadows and pastures, in intermediate moors and on the banks of water. It prefers nutrient-rich, often calcareous or salty, compacted, sandy or pure clay soils . In Central Europe it is a character species of Juncetum compressi from the Agropyro-Juncion association, but also occurs in Cyperetum flavescentis.

features

It is a perennial, wintering green geophyte . The herbaceous plant reaches heights between 15 and 35, sometimes up to 50 centimeters. It forms short runners. The compressed stems grow upright to ascending. These have one or two leaves and a blackish, non-shiny leaf sheath at the base . The two-pointed, gray-green leaves are narrow, filamentous, weakly runny and equipped with long sheaths and blunt ears.

The terminal inflorescence is a loose to somewhat contracted, multi-flowered spiral made up of several partial inflorescences . It is clearly surmounted by a bract. The 2 to 3 millimeters long, reddish to brown tepals have a membranous edge, a green central nerve and are blunt at the end. The capsule fruits are spherical, yellow-brown and significantly longer than the tepals. The seeds are up to 0.4 mm long. The seeds spread by adhering to the fur or plumage of animals or by the wind. The flowering period extends from June to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40 or 44.
