The Second Skirmish near Erlenbach (also known as the Gehrenkrieg ) was a military conflict and was fought in the course of the Old Zurich War on nominally city Zurich territory in Erlenbach ( Switzerland ). However, there is some confusion about the course of the battle and whether it actually took place.

The opponents were troops from the Swiss town of Schwyz on the one hand and troops from the imperial city of Zurich and the Habsburgs on the other .

prehistory

The dominion of the city of Zurich was still largely occupied by the Swiss Confederation in October 1445, after the permanent places Regensberg and Grüningen had fallen in 1443 and Greifensee in 1444 . Besides the city of Zurich itself, Rapperswil remained the last remaining bulwark; the city has been besieged for the third time since April 1445, so that supplying it via Lake Zurich was the city of Zurich's primary goal. In 1445, the decisive battles for supremacy on the lake took place. The struggle for maritime domination was accompanied by raids on both sides of the lake.

course

The exact course of the fight is unclear, since the older literature often confused the encounter with the First Battle at Erlenbach and / or confused it; this took place almost exactly one year earlier, on October 13, 1444, at the same place. In the older literature, the meeting was often referred to as the “Battle of Ehrlibach”, although it probably meant the more important meeting of the previous year. It is possible that it was a dating error and that the conflict could even be the same. This would make sense insofar as the Schwyz landed in Erlenbach before the first battle (October 6, 1444?). On the other hand, the year 1445 would also fit, as the Schwyz people were certainly still suffering from the Zurich wine embargo in the war year 1445 and a second raid against Erlenbach would have been appropriate. In addition, Hans von Rechberg was particularly active in this area in the war year 1445, which suggests that even the first "Battle of Ehrlibach" occurred in the run-up to the sea battle near Männedorf , the battle of Wollerau and the destruction of the Schwyz fleet towards the end of the year and therefore would be dated on October 6th or 13th, 1445 respectively.

In any case, the legend reports that courageous women from Erlenbach are said to have caused a lot of noise with the help of pipes and pan lids in order to simulate a superior force of the Zurich troops; the people of Schwyz were deceived by it and withdrew to the ships.
