Hans von Rechberg zu Schramberg , South German, around 1460

Hans von Rechberg (* around 1410; † November 13, 1464 in Villingen in the Black Forest ) was a Württemberger knight who was involved as a feud entrepreneur in numerous feuds, wars and raids in the Swiss and Swabian regions. He is considered the founder of the Schramberg rule , who combined the parts of the Falkenstein-Falkenstein , Falkenstein-Ramstein and Schilteck dominions he had acquired into one territory.

Life

Born around 1410 as the youngest (fourth) son of Heinrich von Rechberg († 1437) from the Rechberg line of von Hohenrechberg and Countess Agnes von Helfenstein , Hans inherited the rule of Gammertingen-Hettingen when his father died , after he had married Verena , a Daughter of the Truchsess Johannes II von Waldburg , widow of Johannes von Zimmer († 1430), had married.

Combat and military force had been part of Hans von Rechberg's life since the 1430s. He was involved in the unsuccessful campaign against the Hussites of 1431, stood as a captain on the side of the Hegau nobility in the fight against the Bishop of Constance (1440/1441) and significantly supported Hegau “robber barons” against Ulm and Ravensburg merchants (“City War” 1441/1442 ). In the Old Zurich War , Rechberg was a Habsburg captain in 1443 (→  Battle of St. Jakob an der Sihl 1443), and in 1444 the chief captain of the city of Zurich. In 1446 he occupied the county of Sargans together with the Barons von Brandis , but lost the subsequent battle at Ragaz . In October 1448 he attacked Rheinfelden , which became part of the Habsburg family , and a year later he fell out with his Austrian employer . In the meantime, the Rechberger had married Countess Elisabeth von Werdenberg-Sargans († 1469); she brought the financial means into the marriage - including half the share in the Ruggburg - which enabled her husband to acquire the Falkenstein rulers along the Schiltach through purchase or pledging, while Hans was able to sell his rulership of Gammertingen-Hettingen to the Counts of Württemberg (1447). In 1449 Elisabeth owned the pledged Ramstein Castle , and by 1452 at the latest, Hans von Rechberg owned the Unterfalkenstein .

After the sale of his headquarters, the Rechberger obviously tried to expand his rule in the Black Forest. The feuds against imperial cities did not exactly favor such an enterprise, even if the person who caused such disputes received compensation for the destruction of Ramstein Castle in 1454. With the money, Hans von Rechberg succeeded in building Hohenschramberg Castle, a center for his rule on the upper Schiltach (1457/1459). In the following years the nobleman was in the service of Württemberg (1458, 1463). The feud against the Counts of Werdenberg and the knighthood with St. Jörgenschild led to the siege of Schramberg Castle in 1464, Hans von Rechberg was wounded on a raid and died on November 13, 1464 as a result of the injury in Villingen . He was buried near the Franciscan Church in Villingen .
