The Ruggburg is the ruin of a spur castle on a mountain spur halfway up the western slope of the Pfänderrücken in the municipality of Eichenberg in Vorarlberg . The Upper Tyrolean Salt Road from Bad Hall to Lindau, which runs past the castle, reaches the shores of Lake Constance near Lochau, not far from the old imperial cities of Lindau and Bregenz .

history

The first medieval complex, known as Trudburg , probably dates from the 10th century, was destroyed in 1025 and rebuilt between 1040 and 1125. In 1245 a servant Heinrich von Rugeburc was named as the owner , who was probably a ministerial of the lords of Montfort zu Bregenz or Tettnang . In 1430 the castle came into the possession of the wealthy family of Heinrich Vogt von Summerau .

In 1450, Count Heinrich IX. from Werdenberg-Sargans to Vaduz the castle. His daughter Elisabeth married the notorious robber baron Hans von Rechberg , who thus became part of the owner alongside his father-in-law. Rechberg, who called himself a knight, but had never been knighted, also led his raids against merchants from there and was involved in armed conflicts with the Swabian cities ( Ulm , Lindau , Wangen , Ravensburg , Isny , Leutkirch , Memmingen , Kempten and Biberach ) involved, which formed an emergency community in 1452 and besieged the Ruggburg with 600 men under the leadership of Memmingen captains. They destroyed the castle by shelling within five weeks. Hans von Rechberg was able to escape from the burning castle through a secret passage and was fatally wounded twelve years later in an attack on a Black Forest village. For more information on the clashes see under Herrschaft Eisenburg # Heinrich, the robber

In 1529 and again in 1825, large parts of the ruins fell down the steep western slope. At the drip line is still the towering danger of collapsing east side of the keep . In 1944 there was one death and one seriously injured from falling parts of the wall.

The castle ruin is now a listed building (Object ID: 20021), the site of the ruin is privately owned.

Building description

The two-part, 75-meter-long castle complex is located on the western tip of a mountain ridge facing Lake Constance , about 290 meters west-northwest of the village of the same name, Ruggberg, at 665  m above sea level. A. Height. The main castle of the complex is located at the top of the ridge and is separated from the extended outer castle east in front of it by a neck ditch .

The keep stood free in the former center of the inner castle, but several landslides destroyed the western part of the inner castle and that of the keep. Only the ruinous, 12.20 meter long east side of the donjon has survived; it consists of warehouse masonry with different quarry stone formats and partially preserved corner blocks. The main castle is surrounded by a circular wall surrounded, in the south side of a residential building, possibly the Palas , was involved.

60 meters east of the castle complex there is a deep outer ditch as an obstacle to the approach to the driveway to the outer bailey. The castle path coming from the northeast over this ditch leads south of a triangular tower into the outer bailey. This bastion-like turret dates from the second quarter of the 15th century. From the outer bailey, next to the tower, only sparse remains of walls, especially the curtain wall, have survived.
