The castle Hohenbregenz is the ruin of a high medieval hilltop castle at Bregenz in Vorarlberg in Austria .

location

The ruin is located southeast of Bregenz on the 598  m high Gebhardsberg , which is a popular excursion destination due to its extensive view of Lake Constance .

A pilgrimage church of St. Gebhard was built in the former palace of the castle in 1723 , which gives the mountain its name.

History of Hohenbregenz Castle

The castle was built in the last quarter of the 11th century (before 1097) by the Counts of Bregenz (Ulriche). The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1209.

In 1143 the castle passed to the Counts of Pfullendorf , but only remained in their possession for a short time. Just a few years later (1170) it came to the Count Palatine Hugo von Tübingen (father Hugo I Count von Montfort ). The upper part of the castle was sold in 1451 and the lower part of the castle in 1523 to the Habsburgs , who made the castle the seat of Austrian bailiffs.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was expanded into a fortress. In 1647, towards the end of the Thirty Years' War , they were able to take Swedish troops without a fight. They blew up the fortress in the same year by igniting five mines (see Naval War on Lake Constance 1632–1648 ).

History of the pilgrimage church on Gebhardsberg

Pilgrimage church hl. Gebhard

Hermits settled in the ruins and built the first hermitage . From 1670 the ruin gained importance as a place of pilgrimage for Saint Gebhard. In 1723 the church built in the ruins was consecrated in honor of St. George and St. Gebhard and since then only talked about Gebhardsberg.

The church burned down in 1791, but was rebuilt in its current form in the same year. Monks of the abolished Petershausen monastery near Konstanz, which was once founded by Gebhard , donated an arm relic of St. Gebhard to the church in 1821 . In 1896/1897 on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of St. Gebhard, the Munich painter Gebhard Fugel designed the church interior with impressive frescoes.

The most recent renovation was carried out in 1994/1995.

Todays use

In the course of its new use, the ruin was adapted and expanded several times for religious and gastronomic purposes. In 1964, the castle restaurant was built in its current form based on plans by Willibald Braun and Franz Menia. A cannon from the Thirty Years' War was found and a Gothic ceiling from Rankweil was installed in the knight's room. A room named after her with her picture commemorates the Empress Maria Theresa and the former Habsburg possessions.
