The Castle Neu-Montfort (or Neumontfort ) is the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle at Götzis in Vorarlberg .
history
Götzis' landmark was built on the northeastern foothills of the Therenberg above the village between 1311 and 1319 by the Counts of Montfort . The first written mention of it comes from the year 1319. A few decades later they sold their rule to the Habsburgs , who were able to acquire the castle complex in 1390.
The castle was occupied during the Appenzell War (1405-1408) by the federal government above the lake and used as a base. This makes Neu-Montfort one of the few castles that were not destroyed by the Appenzell people.
Neu-Montfort is a simply structured facility. The castle was originally only of the powerful, still five-story bergfried like residential tower with high input on the northeast side in the height of the second floor and the cultivated in the West, but that has left Palas .
The decline began towards the end of the 17th century when Ulrich Koch , the last castle administrator to live here, died in 1693 . The castle ruins now belong to the community of Götzis - the curtain wall was restored in 1970 and in 1974/75.
