The parish and pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Visitation and Loreto Chapel (also: Rankweil Basilica ) is a Roman Catholic basilica in the market town of Rankweil in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg on the Liebfrauenberg rising in the middle of the village. The church belonging to the diocese of Feldkirch was elevated to a minor basilica in 1985 .

Fortified church complex

There are no remains of the former castle of the Counts of Montfort . From 1470 an existing fortified church was renewed and enlarged. Upstream in the east is a churchyard with defensive walls with roofed battlements with shooting windows and a row of loopholes on the top of the wall with a gate tower protruding over the line of the wall.

Parish Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary

In the church there is a crucifix from the end of the 12th century. There are bells from 1470, 1497, 1548, and a bell by Christian Schmid from 1719. The organ by Alois Schönach from 1873 was rebuilt in 1961.

Pilgrimage church Loreto chapel and miraculous image

In the years 1657 to 1658, builder Michael Beer built a Loreto chapel (also grace chapel and confessional chapel) as a side aisle. At the same time, the bastion-like defense tower with the round floor plan of the church fortifications was improved by Beer around 1500 by installing a spiral staircase and adding a bell storey with an eight-sided tent roof. The Chapel of Grace was rebuilt in 1757. A wrought iron grille was made by the art locksmith Franz Martin Huber in 1776 and was installed in 1778. The miraculous image , a carved figure of Mary with child , is surrounded by a gilded Rococo altar by the sculptor Johannes Rueland from 1470 and since the renovation of the chapel in 1757.

Fridolin Stone Chapel

A chapel with a figure of St. Fridolin from the 20th century was built in a vaulted room under the sacristy at the east-facing church entrance . The chapel contains a quartz marble stone, in which St. Fridolin allegedly sank with his knees during a prayer, and an impression is said to have been made. The stone also shows signs of use, because over the centuries many believers kneeled there in prayer.

Rectory on Liebfrauenberg

The rectory was built in 1717 on three floors with a five-axis gable facade.
