Alt-Montfort Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle between Weiler and Fraxern in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley . Hugo III von Tübingen , who later called himself Hugo I von Montfort, had it built at the end of the 12th century, in 1206 or 1208 the castle was first mentioned in a document.

Surname

“Montfort” is a modification of the Latin terms mons (mountain) and fortis (brave, strong), so roughly “Starkenberg”. The “ Counts of Montfort ” called themselves after this residence .

history

The largest contiguous remnant of the wall

In 1375 Duke Leopold III took over. of Austria the castle. The castle complex was completely destroyed during the Appenzell War in 1405. In 1417 the castle came into the possession of the Toggenburg counts and in 1436 into the possession of Duke Friedrich IV of Austria. From 1679 the Clary-Aldringen family owned the castle. Michael Fink became the owner in 1837. Today only a few remains of the wall are preserved and recognizable.
