Space (organization)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zwischenraum is a German - speaking self - help organization for Christians regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, e.g. B. Lesbian , Gay , Bisexual , Transgender and Intersexual . Zwischenraum is non-denominational, many members have an evangelical , pietistic or charismatic background, and offer information and a framework for self-help through contact with other LGBTQ Christians. The founder Günter Baum and other members of the organization are part of the ex-ex-gay movement.

Goals and Activities

The organization describes itself as a group of "committed LGBT Christians who love Jesus Christ." The group wants to offer the opportunity and the freedom to deal with belief, homosexual or bisexual orientation or trans * gender without fear. On this basis, information and help are offered independently of certain religious communities. The focus is on networking and exchanging ideas with other LGBTQ Christians.

The organization criticizes ex-gay groups, such as the Wüstenstrom association or the Young Christians Offensive , which claim to "cure" homosexuality. Attention is drawn to the unscientific nature, dangerousness and impossibility of changing one's sexual orientation as determined by the professional associations, and the viewpoint of sexual orientation and gender identity that is the cause of these therapeutic attempts is criticized.

Organization, membership structure and meetings

In Germany , Switzerland and Austria , the organization says it currently has 17 regional groups and 5 friendly groups. In Germany, "Zwischenraum e.V." a non-profit association that is a member of the Diakonisches Werk of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland . The supraregional organs of the association are the general assembly, board and extended board, the association is organized in regional groups (also known as house groups ), which are led by regional leaders.

In addition to the regular meetings of the regional groups, "Zwischenraum" organizes a national conference once a year in Wiesbaden with up to 150 participants, mostly from Germany and Switzerland. "Zwischenraum" provides information with information stands at major Christian events such as the German Evangelical Church Congress or the Christival or at street festivals and CSDs .

Controversy

The group has received particular attention in the context of publications about organizations such as Desert Power in the daily press. Not least because of the story of the founder Baum, Zwischenraum is cited in connection with the ex-gay movement as a counter-example to the theses of the ex-gay movement.

In the meantime, however, Günter Baum and Markus Hoffman from Wüstenstrom have come to a joint declaration, where they are against being instrumentalized by the media and express an interest in a critical dialogue with one another.
