Christival is a multi-day youth - Congress , in since 1976. Germany takes place. Carrier is the non-profit association Christival eV

history

The first youth congress, Christival '76, the congress for employees in Essen, was a result of the Jesus movement in the 1970s. The aim was to give the missionary youth work cohesion and to give young people with a clear biblical basis inspiration and a meeting place. The youth evangelization work group (AGJE) and a work group for evangelistic activities took over the preparation. The program was developed by a large executive committee with over a hundred participants.

From 1996 in Dresden, the congress for employees was transformed into a congress for young Christians , which since then has been offering events for non-Christians in addition to training employees.

organizer

The sponsor and organizer of Christival is the non-profit association Christival e. V. , which is a member of the German Evangelical Alliance (DEA). It has 122 members from the Protestant regional churches, from free churches as well as from various Christian aid organizations and associations. The board consists of the first chairman Karsten Hüttmann , the managing director Chris Pahl and other representatives of Christian youth associations.

The Christival is organized by full-time and mostly volunteer employees in the office. In addition, there are a few hundred volunteers who plan different areas of the Christival in various working groups.

The Christival is financed by the members of Christival e. V., grants from the state and church organizations as well as other donors. Christival e. V. has the donation seal of the German Evangelical Alliance.

Christival 2016

The Christival 2016 took place from May 4th to 8th in Karlsruhe under the motto "Jesus reconciled". The new chairman as the successor to Roland Werner is now Karsten Hüttmann from the YMCA Association in Kassel. Hüttmann sees the Christival as a combination of diakonia and evangelism as well as various spiritual currents. Over 10,000 permanent participants and almost 3,000 day visitors from 20 nations attended the 480 individual events as well as 180 seminars and workshops.

The following special formats were offered:

  • Picnic in Karlsruhe Palace Park: 15,000 participants found space on 1,500 picnic blankets. The first mayor of Karlsruhe Wolfram Jäger gave the opening address. Afterwards, free open-air concerts were offered in several locations in the city.
  • Bag & Breakfast: The morning impulses were printed on bread bags that each participant received for breakfast. These could be considered as a group or alone.
  • Exchange of words with the Bible live: In four different exchanges in the morning, the Bible texts of the day were discussed. In all four events the participants read the Bible themselves and were able to ask their questions in small groups and to the preachers on stage. Each exchange of words had a different approach. With "Plug In", each participant could choose between three channels, preachers and musical styles on their headphones.
  • Bar camps: On Saturday afternoon, 4500 participants took place in the bar camps. These moderated, interactive groups made it possible to a. a regional network.

The following artists were involved in the program for music and cabaret: Kings and Priests, Outbreakband, Normal ist anders, Mr. Joy, October Light, Lupid, Live-Worship, Karsten Feist, Marco Michalzik, Judy Bailey, Staryend, Soul-Devotion, 2Flügel , Adonia, Deborah Rosenkranz, Good Weather Forecast, fli_da elephant, David Kadel, Johannes Falk and MJ Deech.

Christival 2008

The patron of Christival 2008 was Ursula von der Leyen , Federal Minister for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth, who also chaired the Board of Trustees. She wanted to recognize Christian child and youth work and expected the Christival 2008 to provide similar impulses for sustainable Christian child and youth work as from previous Christivals. At the time of her decision to take over the patronage, the contents of the individual seminars were not yet known in detail. She later intervened in this regard in individual cases. The Family Ministry supported the Christival with 250,000 euros; that was 8% of the total cost.

Further supporters were the Bremen Evangelical Church , whose secretary Renke Brahms sat on the board of trustees, former mayor Henning Scherf , Bishop Hans-Jürgen Abromeit (Greifswald) and the Bavarian regional bishop Johannes Friedrich . The company sponsors of Christival 2008 included u. a. the Friedhelm Loh Group , Heinrich Deichmann-Schuh and Nissan Germany .

Goals and program

The motto of Christival 2008 was Jesus moves. Like its previous events, it was a youth congress with an educational and missionary focus. His theological assessment was clearly evangelical, as it committed itself to the basis of the Evangelical Alliance, the Lausanne commitment and the theological explanation of the biblical basis of the youth evangelization work group.

According to the federal government, the “Christival 2008” was a source of inspiration for Christian child and youth work, which was expected to have an impact on the sustainability of youth work in associations and communities. The Federal Government listed the following goals:

  • Open up perspectives for creative youth work with German and foreign youth
  • Promotion of ecumenical coexistence
  • Strengthening young people against violence and xenophobia
  • promote political education
  • Promotion and qualification for volunteer work in church and society
  • Strengthen cooperation and innovation
  • Raising awareness of the needs of people with disabilities.

More than 280 individual events were planned for Christival 2008, including the three central church services that were part of the program for all Christival visitors. Morning Bible studies were carried out on three days, and festivals in the evening hours in the swimming pool, on the trams, in the city and in the exhibition halls. At night, the participants should go to Bremen pubs, where, as in churches and other event locations, performances by musicians, cabaret artists, athletes and others were held. The “YoungLeaders” program was aimed at voluntary and full-time youth leaders from migrant communities and abroad.

German and international bands and other artists were hired to perform music and cabaret. Just like numerous stands, campaign vehicles and sports offers, this should also make the event attractive for non-participants.

50,000 invitations were only to be distributed to households in Bremen during the festival. On the one hand, the magazine “Moin Bremen” was supposed to inform the citizens of Bremen about the Christival and invite them to the big closing service on the Bürgerweide. On the other hand, invitations were made to certain church services in congregations of the Evangelical Alliance in Bremen, which would work on the subject of the promise in Joh 3,16  LUT for the following six weeks based on a book by Max Lucado .

The JesusHouse Band was mainly responsible for the musical design of the central events. Numerous other bands and musicians were also involved: including Allee der Kosmonauten , Ararat , Arne Kopfermann , Claas P. Jambor , Crushead , Danny Fresh , Gaetan Roy , iThemba , Jens Sembdner , Judy Bailey , Matt Redman , Sarah Brendel , Sarah Kaiser , Superzwei , Van Dooren Sisters .

Disruptions and controversies

In the run-up it was argued whether the Christival was fundamentalist . Seminars on the question of the changeability of homosexuality and on abortion have been criticized many times, especially by Volker Beck . During the festival, radical left-wing autonomists briefly and violently broke through the barriers to the event, despite police protection . The organizers responded with a call to respond non-violently and in the love of Jesus .

Supporters of the festival fought against the allegation of fundamentalism, including the EKD , whose highest representative, Bishop Wolfgang Huber , took part in the Christival and donated the Lord's Supper there on Friday, as well as several leading clergy from Protestant regional churches.

Der Spiegel saw the fifth Christival in Germany as proof that a “conservative wave” of the worldwide evangelical movement and its striving for influence in politics and society had reached Germany. The left taz accompanied the event critically.

The federal government designated both Christival e. V. as well as the working group of Protestant youth as "absolutely serious organizers" and did not see it as "their job to analyze every detail there". After the cancellation of the seminar on the changeability of homosexuality in January 2008, the organizers of the Christival could not understand the further "emotionally agitated public discussion" about the individual seminars.

One of the controversial seminars was entitled "Understanding Homosexuality - Opportunity for Change." It was offered by two speakers from the German Institute for Youth and Society . The parliamentary manager of the Greens in the Bundestag, Volker Beck, called on the then Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen , to prevent this seminar from being held or to return her patronage, as it was about "dangerous psycho courses and offers anti-minority". Von der Leyen then had it checked how such an offer could come about and stated in a letter to Beck that the seminar was withdrawn from the program in January 2008.

Further criticism concerned a seminar entitled "Sex is God's idea - also abortion?" . The criticism was directed against the seminar provider, the Heidelberg association Die Birke . According to its own account, the goal of the birch is to protect embryos and fetuses. She offers individual advice on alternatives to encourage pregnant women to carry children to term instead of having an abortion. The managing director Kristijan Aufiero referred to advice certificates as can be issued by state-approved pregnancy conflict counseling centers as “killing licenses”. Thereupon , the birch from the Protestant press service as radical lifers called. Kristijan Aufiero argued that a woman could cope with rape better than aborting a child conceived during the rape. Annegret Siebe, managing director of Pro Familia Bremen, accused the seminar provider that there “germinating life” counts more than the life of a woman and that this attitude violates a “human right to sexual and reproductive self-determination” that she claims. The seminar took place as planned.
