Roland Werner (born July 1, 1957 in Duisburg-Beeck ) is a German linguist and evangelical theologian . From 2011 to 2015 he was general secretary of the YMCA Association in Germany . Since 2016 he has been professor of theology in a global context at the Evangelical Evangelical University of Tabor in Marburg. He works as a Bible translator, author and speaker, publishes in the fields of linguistics (African studies) and theology (spiritual life, apologetics , mission ) and regularly writes columns in Christian magazines. In 2017 he curated the bible exhibition "Our Book" for the Reformation anniversary in Augsburg and in Wittenberg. From January 2018 he is chairman of the German branch of the international Lausanne movement .

Life

Youth, studies and private matters

Werner attended high school in Duisburg. He completed the eleventh school year at the Nathan Hale High School in Seattle (USA). After graduating from high school in Duisburg, he studied Protestant theology , Semitic studies , African studies , comparative religious studies and religious history in Marburg from 1976 to 1978 . From 1978 to 1980 he studied Protestant theology and Arabic studies in Münster, and from 1980 again in Marburg Protestant theology, African studies and the history of religion. During his studies in Marburg, Werner stayed several times in Egypt and Sudan .

Roland Werner has been married to the theologian and writer Elke Werner , née Brands, since 1983 .

Research and Teaching

In February 1986 he started with a thesis on the subject of Nobiin's grammar . Phonology, morphology and tonology with the predicate magna cum laude for Doctor of Philology doctorate . From 1993 to 1995 he researched northern Sudanese languages ​​with a DFG grant. From 1993 to 1996 he had a postdoctoral fellowship in African Studies at the University of Bayreuth .

From 1987 to 1989 Werner was employed by the German Research Foundation at the University of Frankfurt am Main and carried out research on the Midob (Darfur-Nubian). At the same time, he held a visiting professorship for Hebrew and Old Testament at the Tabor Theological Seminary (today: Tabor Evangelical University ) from 1986 to 1990 , where he has been honorary professor for theology in a global context since August 2016. After 1996 he undertook further research in Sudan. In 1992 he had a teaching position for Sudanese languages at the Humboldt University . He was visiting professor at the Evangelical Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary , South Hamilton (Boston), Massachusetts , USA in 1996, 2004 and 2006 .

In February 2012 he started his research on “Christianity in Nubia. History and Shape of an Early African Church ”received his doctorate in theology.

Dealing with homosexuality

Werner published well into the nineties as an author and editor on the subjects of homosexuality and "inner healing" as well as on pastoral care for homosexuals. In a 1998 article on homosexuality in general, he argued that "practiced homosexuality" was viewed as a sin in the Old and New Testaments . Elsewhere, however, he said explicitly that he considered "his homosexual tendency, which has now been overcome," to be neither a sin nor a disease. According to Hedwig Porsch , Christian ex-gays share his sexual moral ideas, and according to an article in the left-wing alternative daily taz , Werner was seen in evangelical circles in 1990 as a personal example of the possibility of changing sexual orientation from homosexuality to heterosexuality.

Activity in Christian organizations

Werner was in 1981 co-founded and was until 2013 head of the community Jesus community . With his wife, he led the associated ecumenical community Christ-Treff (CT) in Marburg , Jerusalem and Berlin . In 1990 Werner was appointed university evangelist for the Studentenmission in Deutschland (smd), a position he held until 1992.

In 1996 he took over the management of the Christian youth congress Christival , which he chaired until 2011. In 1998 and 2000 Werner was a speaker for Jesus House , a nationwide youth evangelism.

Roland Werner got involved with ProChrist and the Community Holiday Festival Spring. By resolution of the ProChrist general assembly on February 5, 2013 in Kassel, Roland Werner took over the management of the ProChrist e. V. In this honorary position , he replaced Raimund Utsch, former board member of Ruhrkohle AG from Marl . Werner has been a member of ProChrist since 1997.

From 2004 to 2006, due to his work in the Jesus Community, he was appointed member of the Committee of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) on the subject of communities and spiritual communities in the EKD and the recorder of the meeting of spiritual communities in the EKD .

He is a board member of the Jerusalem Association in the Berliner Missionswerk , which as a partner of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land administers the German Evangelical lands in the Holy Land, and board member of the Gospel Community of the Middle East (EMO) in Wiesbaden. Since 2005 he has been a member of the leadership group of the Lausanne Movement (Coalition for Evangelism).

On July 3, 2010, Roland Werner was elected General Secretary of the YMCA . He took up office on April 1, 2011 and was introduced to his office on April 16 by the current EKD Council Chairman Nikolaus Schneider . On March 31, 2015, Werner ended the collaboration at his own request.

On August 30, 2007, he was appointed preacher of the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck . Since 2008 Werner has been working on a new translation of the Bible into German. The Gospel of John appeared in advance as a workshop edition for the 2008 Christival under the title “The Book. John's report. ” The complete New Testament appeared in early August 2009 and has reached over 28,000 copies in the first four editions. In July 2014 an expanded edition was published to include the psalms (New Testament and Psalms).

Roland Werner is also a member of the advisory board of the charitable organization wortundtat (Essen-Borbeck) founded by Heinz-Horst Deichmann (1926–2014) in 1977 and a lecturer at the Zinzendorf Institute in Marburg.

In 2018 the German Bible Society awarded him the "Canstein Medal" in recognition of his commitment to spreading the Bible.
