Zygaena laeta is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe ram family (Zygaenidae).
features
butterfly
The moths reach a wingspan of 26 to 34 millimeters. The forewings are elongated and have broad, converging, red longitudinal stripes, which are interrupted by two black points, a black wedge and a dark outer edge. The hind wings are red with a narrow, dark outer edge. The antennae have a club-like thickening at the end. The moths have a red ruff. The thorax is black, about half of the abdomen is brightly red and only black at the very end, which makes it easy to distinguish the species from other red ram species. The trunk is well developed.
egg
The eggs are elliptical and yellow-white in color.
Caterpillar
The newly hatched caterpillars are initially solid yellow and white. When fully grown, they are compact, strongly arched and light blue-green in color. They have indistinct whitish back and side lines, which are framed by black and yellow dots.
Doll
The pupa is yellowish, dark brown in the front part.
Occurrence
The species occurs in south-eastern Central Europe via Hungary to the Black Sea , in the south in Greece and Turkey . In German-speaking countries, it can be found in Lower Austria (e.g. in the Wachau ) and Burgenland , and prefers dry regions, for example steppe areas .
Way of life
The moths are diurnal, fly whirring preferably in the sunshine and like to suckle on various flowers such as B. Marsh ( Scabiosa ) and carduus ( Carduus ). At rest they keep the wings roof-shaped. The females lay the eggs in small groups on the forage plant. The caterpillars overwinter and pupate in a long, elongated, yellowish cocoon.
Flight and caterpillar times
The moths fly in one generation in July and August. The caterpillars can be found from August and after wintering until June.
Food of the caterpillars
The caterpillars feed mainly on field man litter ( Eryngium campestre ).
