He ended his job there in 1913 and traveled to France and Belgium, where he got to know new technologies and used them to project the mine rescue station in Sosnowiec. From 1914 to 1919, Szczotkowski headed the heating material railway office in Warsaw; From 1916 to 1917 he completed the administration college courses there. In 1919 he was in charge of mining at Zawiercie .

For his services to the region, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta on November 11, 1937 . After the outbreak of war, he continued to work as a trustee for the mining company until the formal appointment of a successor on June 3, 1940. He was briefly arrested by the Gestapo on suspicion of sabotage. After his release, he managed the mine for a few months before following his family to Bieżanów in the summer or autumn of 1940 , where they had moved when the war broke out. He died there in 1943 after a serious illness of chronic circulatory insufficiency.

He was married twice, in October 1907 he married the 19-year-old Magdalena Anna, née Sznabl, from whom he later divorced. In June 1923 he married Maria von Wietrzykowski of the Korab family, widowed Borowska.
