ILoveMakonnen (born April 12, 1989 in Los Angeles , California ; real name Makonnen Sheran ) is an American rapper who became famous in 2014 when he worked with Drake on the song Tuesday . He lives in Portland .

Life

Childhood and beginnings

Makonnen Sheran was born in 1989 to a Belizean emigrant and a podiatrist in the south of Los Angeles and grew up in Atlanta . Even during his school days, he often ran into problems with the police, for example when he accidentally shot one of his friends in 2008. He received a suspended sentence for this and was placed under house arrest for a while . His grandmother - a former opera singer - had a great influence on the course of his musical career.

Musical career (2008 to 2014)

At the age of 19 he began to publish his first songs on the MySpace website, but most of them went unnoticed. It wasn't until March 2014 that he met the music producer Mike Will Made It , who put him in contact with an employee of the DTP Studios, Metro Boomin . After he was allowed to record a few songs with him, other well-known personalities of the American hip-hop scene became aware of him, from whom he received great support in his next career steps. After just a few months, he was able to show the first results with his self-titled EP iLoveMakonnen , which he was able to download free of charge from the Internet from July 2014. This album included the single Club Goin 'Up on a Tuesday , which he later remixed together with rapper Drake and shortened the name to Tuesday . This collaboration was Sheran's first success in the national singles charts, where he reached number 12. In France, too, the single was able to place in the top 100 with position 86.

OVO Sound (2014 to 2016)

Although Sheran spoke out against commercial record deals in interviews, he was signed to Drake's OVO Sound label in September 2014 , which is distributed by Warner Music Group . His debut EP was re-released three months later. The following time was marked by internal disputes between him and the label bosses, who shortened some of his songs or did not even publish them. There were always differences with Drake as well, which meant that he parted ways with OVO Sound on April 18, 2016 after the release of iLoveMakonnen 2 in order to devote himself to a career as an actor and only to continue his profession as a musician.

His coming out as a gay on Twitter caused a sensation in January 2017.
