COVID-19 pandemic in Antigua and Barbuda

The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred in Antigua and Barbuda since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

On March 13, 2020, the first COVID-19 case in Antigua and Barbuda was confirmed by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who first appeared in the WHO situation report on March 14, 2020. Browne said the person started showing symptoms as early as March 11 and then went to a private hospital where medical workers took samples that were sent to the Caribbean Health Authority's laboratory in Trinidad for testing. Browne assured that no stone would be left unturned as a result, adding that health officials will track down anyone the infected person may have met.

The Prime Minister also announced in mid-March that a central quarantine facility and test station were planned. Citizens were asked to take all necessary precautionary measures, such as washing their hands, avoiding unnecessary contacts and avoiding large gatherings.

From March 28 to April 6, 2020, no new infections were known and the number of infected people remained at seven before the number of cases tripled to over 20 infections within the next ten days by mid-April 2020.

As of May 17, 2020, the WHO confirmed 25 COVID-19 infections and 3 deaths in Antigua and Barbuda.
