COVID-19 pandemic in the Palestinian Territories
The COVID-19 pandemic in the Palestinian Territories affects two areas that are under Palestinian self- government. They are part of the disputed state of Palestine under international law .
background
The COVID-19 pandemic began in the People's Republic of China in December 2019 . The novel respiratory disease COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group . On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the event as a global pandemic .
Situation and course
Gaza Strip
Around two million people live on the 360 km² Gaza Strip around the city of Gaza . The country is controlled by HAMAS . Spread of the disease would quickly become uncontrollable. There are only 50 to 60 ventilators and around 2500 hospital beds in the country, 70 of them for intensive care. The Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, where 140,000 Palestinian refugees live on 1.4 square kilometers, is particularly at risk if the disease spreads .
Since March 15, 2020, people who pass one of the two border crossings (Eres crossing to Israel, Rafah crossing to Egypt) have to go into a 14-day quarantine.
On the morning of March 22, 2020, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that two sick people had been identified. They were people who had previously been in Pakistan.
The markets, restaurants, cafes and mosques were closed; Friday prayers have also been canceled.
The Land Day on March 30, is celebrated in the Gaza Strip without mass protests.
West Bank
In the 5,800 km² large part of the West Bank , which is under Palestinian self-government, Fatah is in control. It consists of many individual areas. In other areas, control is shared with Israel under the Oslo Agreement .
Around March 6, 2020, 16 infected residents were identified in Bethlehem . They were hotel workers and their relatives.
Foreign tourists are currently no longer allowed to visit the West Bank.
