COVID-19 pandemic in Nicaragua

The COVID-19 pandemic has occurred in Nicaragua since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that began in China in December 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic .

On March 17, 2020, the government of Nicaragua announced that Cuba would send a "brigade" of doctors and pharmacists to Nicaragua to help the country contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo said there would be general practitioners, pharmacists and critical care doctors among the Cuban staff.

The so-called Henry Reeve ”Cuban medical brigade arrived in Nicaragua on March 18th. In the first phase of the pandemic, 1.2 million households in the country were visited to educate people about the virus and explain the rules of conduct such as distance and hygiene according to the WHO . Further regulations were decreed: Foreign travelers should go into a 14-day quarantine. The schools and public buildings were not closed. The government worked with the Panamerican Health Organization and agreed on any further steps that might become necessary.

On March 18, 2020, the first COVID-19 disease was reported in Nicaragua, and on March 26, the first COVID-19-related death was recorded in the country. On May 16, 2020, 25 COVID-19 infections have been counted so far, 8 of which were fatal.

On May 17, 2020, on a national holiday, it was announced that the government of Nicaragua had released 2,727 men and 88 women from prisons. This release was welcomed by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights , which was ordered in connection with the COVID-19 crisis, but criticized the lack of involvement of 37 politically imprisoned prisoners who were ill.
