COVID-19 pandemic in Cameroon

The COVID-19 pandemic has been occurring in Cameroon since March 2020 as part of the global COVID-19 pandemic that started in China in December 2019. The pandemic affects the novel disease COVID-19 . This is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the Coronaviridae group and belongs to the group of respiratory diseases . From March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the outbreak of the novel coronavirus as a global pandemic.

Course and measures

On March 6, 2020, the first COVID-19 disease was confirmed in Cameroon. The infected person was a French national who arrived in the capital, Yaoundé on February 24. The second case in the country was also announced on March 6th. It was a Cameroonian citizen who was in close contact with the first case. The first case appeared in the WHO situation report on March 6, 2020.

On March 18, the Cameroonian Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute closed the land, air and sea borders.

The first COVID-19-related death in the country occurred on March 24, 2020. This fatality first appeared in the WHO Situation Report on March 25, 2020.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country continued to rise through March 2020. On March 30, the Minister of Health announced that there were 142 active cases and six deaths recorded in Cameroon. Also on March 30, the Minister of Health announced the impending start of a coronavirus test campaign in the city of Douala, with government officials going door to door in the capital from April 2 to 6, the Minister said.

On April 10, the government took seven measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Cameroon. The following measures took effect on Monday April 13, 2020:

  • Measure 1: Obligation to wear a protective mask in all publicly accessible areas;
  • Measure 2: If possible, local production of drugs, screening tests, protective masks and hydroalcoholic gels;
  • Measure 3: Establish specialized COVID-19 treatment centers in all regional capitals;
  • Measure 4: Intensification of the screening campaign in cooperation with the Center Pasteur;
  • Action 5: Step up the awareness campaign in urban and rural areas in both official languages;
  • Measure 6: Continuation of essential business activities in strict compliance with previous guidelines;
  • Measure 7: Possible sanctions for violations of the regulations.

On April 15, President Paul Biya announced the release of certain prisoners related to COVID-19, according to the Human Rights Commission of the Cameroon Bar Association.

As of April 19, 2020, the WHO confirmed 1,016 COVID-19 cases and 21 COVID-19-related deaths in Cameroon.
