Joel Philip Stacey (born January 21 1978) is an American singer and a top 6 finalist on season 6 of American Idol. He auditioned in Memphis. He was eliminated from the competition, alongside Chris Richardson, on May 2, 2007.

Biography

Personal life

Stacey was born in Harlan County, Kentucky.[1] His mother, Adrell Horn, was born in Madison County, Kentucky and works as a nurse in Smyrna, Tennessee.[2] His father, Gary Stacey, is a Church of God (Cleveland) minister who pastors a church. Stacey's maternal grandfather, Carlie Horn, was also a Church of God pastor.[1] Stacey grew up in Fairfield, Ohio and began singing in church.[1] In 2006, he served as the music minister for First Coast Christian Center in Jacksonville, Florida. He currently serves in the United States Navy as a Musician Third Class, and is stationed at Navy Band Southeast in Jacksonville.

Stacey graduated from Wichita Northwest High School in Wichita, Kansas in 1997. He attended Lee University[3][4] in Cleveland, Tennessee. He holds a degree in vocal performance from Lee, where he was a member of the exclusive choir, Lee Singers, and its even more exclusive touring group, Second Edition. In addition to his vocal prowess, he is memorable for missing the birth of his daughter, McKayla, to audition for Idol. He also has one other daughter, Chloe. WXKB in Fort Myers has recently started playing his version of Every Breath You Take. On the April 11, 2007 American Idol episode, Stacey escaped elimination after being voted in the bottom three. Stacey has been in the bottom three four times and also for three consecutive weeks, tying the record with Season Four performer Anthony Fedorov for the second-highest number of times in the bottom three, behind Season One performer Nikki McKibbin, who was in the bottom three six times. He was eliminated along with Chris Richardson in the top six results episode; no one had been eliminated the week before.

On American Idol

Generally, Stacey received mixed reviews on American Idol. He was often criticized for having trouble in his low register and for sometimes seeming to coast vocally until the big finale. Simon Cowell, in particular, did not give Stacey many positive comments until country week when he performed "Where the Blacktop Ends" in a country style of voice. He received generally positive reviews from then until his exit.

He was the only contestant to have a different song for his tribute video when he was voted out from idol, which wasCarrie Underwood's I'll Stand By You instead of Home by Daughtry— because it wasn't Stacey's time to go. Conflict with the Navy caused him to leave early without being voted off.

Post Idol

On May 19, 2007, Chris Sligh stated on his personal blog[5] that he, Phil Stacey, and Chris Richardson will "be heading off to studios somewhere [after the American Idols Live! Tour] to work on [their] debut major label records" and then added, "or at least it looks at this point like all 3 of [them] will be on major labels." However, it is unclear as to which label Stacey will be signed to, since his contractual obligations with American Idol limit his ability to sign with any labels until after the American Idols Live! Tour. Phil, along with the 11 other finalists from Season 6, released an EP via iTunes. The EP peaked at #80 on the iTunes Pop 100.
